Re: Fouled Prop: Potential Transmission/ shaft Damage.

Thankfully they didn’t pull out of the stringer. Looks like the rubber took all of the load. What transmission do you have by the way? Also while you have the engine up and or out I would disconnect the tranny and replace the damper plate or at least try and get a bore scope in there to see if you have any broken springs.

Situations like this is why 'dripless shaft seals' scare the hell out of me. I know they work and I have installed them myself. However if that bellows had been damaged you could have been shipping water inboard in a very bad way. Much more water than a typical bilge pump can handle. The old fashion stuffing box would not fail like that.

and stuffing box hoses can fail also or snap their clamps, or....
An acquaintance fractured the joint between the stern tube and hull when the engine came off the mounts in a similar situation

Seems to me that compressing the bellows is unlikely to rupture it.

And it didn't...

True, it has done well.

But I personally would no longer trust it.

I may be paranoid... but mine scares the bejesus out of me.
