Drive Shaft Replaced

Hi all,
I had my drive shaft changed completely recently with the shaft housing. It was changed because the mechanic said that it was the reason I was having leak, which turned out not to be the case.
I spent over $3000.00 on the work, and barely used the boat after ( motored for 5 hours). Recently someone told me that the shaft need to be replaced because the job that was done on it was terrible.
What do you think?
Andy

Re: Drive shaft replaced

That is a poor engine alignment. Looking at it all a new cutlass bearing and a proper mounting on the arm alignment should be all you need. But what a mess.

Re: Drive shaft replaced

It looks bad. You better study up on this because you have at least 2 problems. Alignment and the pitting/zink problem. You don't want to get screwed again. Sorry

Re: Drive shaft replaced

That cutlass bearing is absolutely shot. It looks like it needed to be changed 10 years ago.

I would say start with a new cutlass bearing and an alignment. Then see how things look.

Did you do a new stuffing box with the new shaft? Or at least new stuffing in the old box? That should take care of most of the leaking issue.

FYI, I'm no expert but I did change my shaft and packing gland and whatnot during a recent repower. I didn't change my cutlass because it was still solid.

Re: Drive shaft replaced

Looking at the first picture, I get the impression the rear support strut is actually badly out of alignment, at a guess I would say something has hit it rather hard from behind and bashed it forwards.

No point putting a new cutlass in there, it would be chewed out in minutes.

Any recollection of an event that might have caused that strut to move?

Also might be a little bit of movement to port, but that is harder to tell from the pictures, but if I was a betting man... yeah, I'd say to port as well.

Boy ... that's a bad cutlass bearing! Was it replaced with the shaft? Did he align the whole thing, pack the stuffing box and replace the cutlass?.... or just replace the shaft?
The shaft may have been replaced because the stuffing box seal area was shot... but the job should have been completed properly.

Re: Drive Shaft Replaced

A few months ago I took our boat in for a cutlass bearing replacement. That quickly morphed from a simple procedure into major surgery. A strut and shaft replacement later we were back in the water.

Looking at the workmanship you paid for makes my blood boil.

Was the strut bent in your case, or was it replaced for some other reason such as corrosion?

Just curious, as I wonder how often, if ever, struts get bent.

Our issue was much more entertaining. Our boat has an electric drive, and the shaft was bronze. Despite the zincs, our shaft and strut went pink. Apparently the shaft had been used as a ground. In the case of the strut, it had gone soft and was sheering around the cutlass bearing.

Nasty is an understatement. Thankfully, the boat yard sorted everything out and we are good to go. Surprisingly, the yard that first installed this drive, one with a reputation for excellence, made this whole mess possible. That was prior to our ownership though.

I think that's the worst alignment of a propshaft strut I've ever seen. Someone had to have moved it.

We'd appreciate knowing what yard and mechanic not to go to for that kind of work. It is absolutely terrible.

Re: Drive Shaft Replaced

This is another reason I have learned to maintain every item on my boat.
By the looks of the shots, thats not recent work, or the guy put the old zink back on.. or you've got a damn HOT marina.

I had the work done last year in one marina, then I motored the boat for 5 hours to a different marina last year, and the boat stayed in the slip for the whole summer till Dec, then was put back in a dry dock. I haven't used the boat last year at all. The zinc was placed when the shaft was replaced.
I just watched some videos on youtube on how to replace the cutlass bearing, my question is: Do you do the alignment before you change the cutlass bearing or after?

Thanks.
