Cutless & Stern tube question question

My 1984 Mascot 28 motorsailer was built in Denmark, but it does have components from various EU sources.
I am attaching pics of stern tube with cutless. The cutless appears to be pressed?? into outer end of bronze stern tube. There is a small setscrew?? hole in the top rim of tube. One of the pics shows a weird setscrew?? head down in this hole.It is not a standard slot ,or any other standard head.
Has anyone seen this setup before. How do you get that setscrew out?
The measurements of the existing cutless are:
ID(shaft dia.) 25mm
OD 40mm
I believe a standard Johnson 25mm cutless,as in new cutless ad will fit if I can get the old cutless out.
Thanks for any advice. / Len

Re: Cutless & Stern tube question question

When I changed my cutless bearing a few months ago, I ended up drilling out my set screws and tapping some new threads. It took me all day to press out the bearing. It was also the first time I have tried to remove one, and probably made it harder then it really was.

Re: Cutless & Stern tube question question

When installing a new bearing, use Dow Corning High Vacuum Grease on
outside of bearing and you will never have a problem again. Not cheap
but highly effective!

Re: Cutless & Stern tube question question

Look carefully-common to double stack set screws in some applications. If it’s truly upside down-Allen key from the inside after copious ATF/acetone? If no hex recess either side, possibly previously broken off-gotta drill & tap

Just go through the hassle of really cleaning that hole out. You shall certainly find an allen key recess (if not rusted away)
Good luck

Re: Cutless & Stern tube question question

You can remove the cutless without removing the set screw. Use a hacksaw blade to make three cuts in the shell of the bearing and tap one of the cuts down and out with a pointed or caping chisel. The remaining parts of the bearing will then come out easily and now you have two sides to inspect that set screw.

Re: Cutless & Stern tube question question

Saws all into pieces as in prior posts just don’t cut the stern tube. There are special pullers in some boat yards. Fabricate a slap puller like auto body shops .
