Beneteau Oceanis 34 Flexofold Prop

Hi

Can anyone recommend a size and pitch for this boat. The engine is a Yanmar 3YM30. It currently has a 16 x 11 but the engine will rev to 4000 rpm when motoring. A 16 x 12 has been suggested?

Thanks

Before I spent any money on changing props, I'd fist verify tach accuracy, cause I don't think it is turning 4,000 RPM. Might be, but I bet it's not.
What does it turn at full throttle in neutral?

Hi

I have checked the engine RPM with a hand held optical tacho and it reads within 5% of the boats Tacho throught the rev range. The engines max power is 3600 RPM. It runs to 4000 in neutral. When motoring it runs to 4000 RPM in Forward and 3000 RPM in Reverse.

Beneteau Oceanis 34 Flexofold Prop

I purchased a Flexofold recently. I contacted them via email, they asked for information on both my engine and transmission, then recommended a specific size and model.

Boat is faster under both power and sail, with less prop walk in reverse.

It was also extremely easy to install.

Hi

I purchased a Flexofold through Beneteau, I provided my boat serial number and they supplied the 16 x 11 which I am convinced is under pitched.

I'd call the prop manufacturer and go with their opinion.
First I wouldn't think the engine should turn that fast, governor should I think be set lower, but here is the problem, since it will turn max governed RPM, it's possible that you have only just a little less pitch than you should, or possibly a whole lot less than you should. Therefore I'd be hesitant to say add an inch and you'll be fine.

If she will turn past 3600 RPM, you are correct, it's underpitched.

Re: Beneteau Oceanis 34 Flexofold Prop

I put a 3 blade Flexofold 16x12 on my Beneteau 343 this spring. I am very happy with this prop. I also have a 3YM30 and my max RPM is supposed to be 3600 which I'm not sure I can even get to. Rick (note my 343 is different than a 34)

Thanks for the advice I think I need to change the blades from 16 x 11 to 16 x 12. Good forum by the way.

Re: Beneteau Oceanis 34 Flexofold Prop

Don't know if they still do it, since I don't think flexofold has a U.S. Rep. anymore, but when I put my prop on the rep said if it was the wrong pitch he would exchange the blades free of charge. I think I paid for the shipping. The blades did have to be in perfect condition and done soon after the installation. I didn't get the rpm's I wanted so exchanged for a size less pitch.

Relatively easy to change the blades in the water. You don't pull the hub, just the pivot bolts on the blades. I should say that was a 2 blade, not sure about the 3 bladed.

Time to call in the pros and go to a prop shop where they can do the calculations as to diameter and pitch matched to your engine and boat. Not an amateur hour situation.

Submit your inquiry directly to Flexofold here:

Propeller Inquiry - Flexofold Sailboat Propellers

They'll get back to you with the appropriate size & pitch.

Re: Beneteau Oceanis 34 Flexofold Prop

I have installed a 3-blade 16x11-3L propeller for my Bavaria Cruiser 36. Faster under sail and on engine. Therefore the engine burn a bit more oil and had to run at a lower RPM, which was ok and the speed still good.

Make sure you have a Galvanic Isolator, the blade are sensitive to Corrosion.

Re: Beneteau Oceanis 34 Flexofold Prop

Just fitted two flex-o-folds to our ketch - definitely ping them across an email and they'll let you know what size they recommend.

Very happy with the props btw - much more initial power in idle and easier to slow the boat approaching the dock.
