Advice ? Hudson force 50 hydraulic steering

I want to switch over from chain to hydraulic and know someone out there has already done it on either a Hudson force 50 or Formosa 51
I have removed my interior helm and am going with B and G electronics and plan to use one of there pumps for the autopilot
If you’ve switched over I would love to know what your using and how you like it
I’m was planning on using a linear drive connected to the quadrant
When I contacted sea star they wouldn’t “size” me without calcs from a naval engineer regarding rudder torque
I can’t be that difficult and so I’m reaching out to the real people!!
Thank you in advance

Why would you want to do that?

Nothing is simpler or more reliable than chain drive.

I have known many sailors with hydraulic steering nightmare stories. Like one couple I met that hand steered with an emergency tiller for three weeks because of a hydraulic oil leak. While planning your autopilot consider putting the autopilot on a separate tiller arm so that a steering failure will not disable the autopilot.

It seems for my size boat the auto pilot linear arm is similar pricing to the entire hydraulic steering setup plus the cost of the auto pilot pump
My chain drive needs a major overhaul so I assume it’s relatively the same cost
That being said it would free up a lot of room underneath and being new I assume I’d get some major years before any issues

Re: Advice ? Hudson force 50 hydraulic steering

Try similar question on TrawlerForum.com, sister site to this CF. Ask about sizing a hydraulic ram for a barn door rudder in a full displacement hull. Post with a picture of your boat hauled if you have one.

Hydraulic steering is by far the most common steering on Trawlers and commercial boats. It works exceptionally well, but many sailors don't care for the lack of helm feedback. Also, if you're used to having a top knot at the 12 o'clock position on your wheel, it will be useless - wheel doesn't move when in AP mode so it immediately loses synch with top knot.

Good luck
