Yesterday I posted my misgivings of losing
engine power while sailing down to the upper
Florida keys, and taking the prudent steps to aim at entrances providing a “wide” channel to maneuver in case an incoming fast
boat usually driven by a person with little to no
training came the other way. That was Sunday.
Little did I know that just a few miles south of where I anchored, and exactly at my original
destination, a 32 ft open Robalo with 15 teenage girls and two adults hit marker 15 at the end of the narrow 1.6 mile stretch of
Cutter Bank pass. All passenger were thrown out and a 15 year girl died of her injuries.
Apparently another
power boat was coming into the pass and the
captain may have tried to swerve to avoid
collision.
My guess is that both were probably going fast in this very narrow channel, and since it was around sunset, they did not see the other
boat until it was too late.
The whole south east
Florida waterways are full of these stories overly month.
