Hello to everyone,

I'm new in this forum. My name is Matias. I wanted to ask if someone of you guys did the YM ocean. I' m about to do my oral exam this wensday and I would like to know what would happen in case my sights were wrong. Is there any choice to pass the exame anyway if the teacher can tell that I know how to do it? Giving me an exersise to resolve for example.
what I mean is is it possible to have a mistake in the sights?

It is not possible to do the tidal qualifications in those waters. Further, as Conachair says, you will learn a lot less overall. The question is do you want to learn to sail or do you want to have a holiday in the sun? If you want the former then learning in higher latitudes and temperate zones is the way to go. Same applies to diving.

Welcome to CF!

This will depend upon the considered opinion of your examining YMI. Some may consider it a failing offense, but I suspect not all. If you are aware that there is a mistake and explain it thoroughly enough then you may well pass in any case. It is at the discretion of the examiner. Their interest is not in failing you but in not passing a candidate who is clearly unqualified. A qualified candidate may well be one who has made an error in one of his qualifying sights/reductions but who understands the nature of the mistake, and can demonstrate how it is corrected. Your knowledge in general of the workings and of celestial navigation is what is most important, along with your more general knowledge of worldwide meteorology, passage planning, crew management etc.

No. RYA membership is not a requirement to sit any YM examination or receive a YM CoC.

This is quite accurate. As long as the examiner is satisfied, a small error is not necessarily an 'automatic fail'.

This notwithstanding, any error in your work would be unusual and certainly cause for concern. Matias, do you have any reason to believe that your sight reductions contain mistakes?
