Where to begin?

Good day one and all,

I have recently been referred to this site by a friend of mine from New Zealand. This is my first post and that start of me figuring out how to get myself going on the water.

I am currently working the payment on a 22ft boat off with a builder in the area (that area being the beautiful West Coast of Scotland). It needs a bit of work, but its all cosmetic - so that will be fun.

I have never sailed a boat before so my knowledge is minimal, just above zero. However I am confident and willing to learn at every possible oppourtunity.

So now to my question - Where would be a good place to pick up some basic knowledge of the mechanisms, terminology, safety, and all else sailing related (i.e. a book, a youtube channel, blogs) that I could be reading up on while my boat is being readied.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Rua

Re: Where to begin?

Welcome to CF Rua!

This is the bible of the sailor... And a very good start...

http://www.amazon.com/Chapman-Piloti.../dp/1588169618

I would say that most of ours have a fairly more plain blue cover... and have a few stains and dog eared pages...

Congratulations on your new boat... I suggest that you not be dismayed when you discover that there are more than just "cosmetic" repairs to be made...

Thanks for the suggestion HappyMdRSailor! That book seems to be what I'm after.

I shan't be dismayed!

Thanks again : D

920 pages of salivating... You'll truly enjoy the reference...

Steadyhand (CF mod) has a standard post of helpful resources for newer members... You can do a search and find it, or he may be along shortly...

Welcome again friend... Promise to stay a while...

Re: Where to begin?

Annapolis book of seamanship does a good job on the basics too.

Re: Where to begin?

Both Chapmans and Annapolis Book of Seamanship are great sources of information. If you would like to get a head start with a live aboard sailing course in the Caribbean, we would be happy to help you out there!

Enjoy your new adventure!
