USCG License Extension

Wanted to share this with anyone in the same situation. My USCG license expired in October 2020. Due to the Covid situation, I was unable to complete the required drug-test, physical, etc. and seriously considered letting my license lapse. I contacted the USCG NMC and they forwarded me this Marine Safety Bulletin allowing licenses that expired between March 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021 an extension to the earlier of October 2021 or 1 year past expiration date,

MSIB 08-20, Change 5, December 22, 2020

Hopefully by October 2021, I'll be in a better position to renew my license. I hope this helps,

Don

Re: USCG License Extension

I saw this, but I am proceeding with my renewal on schedule anyway. My understanding was that a big part of the reason for the extension was that the CG was slow in processing, due to shutdowns at their facilities. Not necessarily to give us a break.

For the record, in the past 30 or so days I've already had my physical, eye exam and drug test. I'm going for my TWIC card renewal this week. I guess if you had COVID, that could slow you down. But frankly, because of COVID, getting appointments has been quicker than usual. The eye doctor's office almost seemed glad to schedule someone.

Re: USCG License Extension

For everyone, if you will not be using you license, do not let it lapse, rather put it in “inactive” status. If you want to reactivate it, there is much less trouble and hassle! If you let it lapse, you have to start the whole license process from zero.

Re: USCG License Extension

You want to put it in "Continuity", if you want to activate it again you get to take an at home, open book exam.

Re: USCG License Extension

Thanks for the suggestions -- it turns out there's a 1 year period after your license expires for filing form 719B (renewal or contunity). With the Covid-19 extension, I've decided to keep my license active through this year.
