type of license for circumnavigating

Hi everyone

we are new to sailing. We are from Brazil and here we have 3 types of certification: amateur (internal waters), mestre ( coastal waters) and captain ( foreign waters)

Due to timing my husband wont be able to get the captain permit, which means we will be starting our trip with a coastal water permit.

We will start by the caribean. How is the license permit in the caribean and going to the pacific?

Also if he wants to take the permit there, is it posible? do you have any reference of where?

thanks!!

Re: type of license for circumnavigating

This type of permit is country by country. If you are legal to operate in the country the vessel is registered in then you are legal pretty much everywhere. If you are not legal in the country of registry then you are not legal anywhere.

That being said I don't think I have ever been asked to provide licenses except when chartering a vessel.

Re: type of license for circumnavigating

Get the license as required by the regulations of your (boat flag) country.

If a coastal license is not enough to take your offshore boat in your home country, it is also not enough when entering a foreign country.

If none required where your boat is registered, still get something: RYA licenses are very widely recognized everywhere.

Consider having a VHF license too.

As discussed in a recent Med thread - there are countries that require you as a visitor to produce a license even if your home (boat flag) country requires none.

Cheers,
b.

The advice given sounds good. I have never been asked for certification anywhere in the Caribbean. If you would like to do some sail training to help you both become better sailors, check out our website. We are based in Grenada - would be happy to help.

Your local license is for sailing in your home waters. Doubtful that you'll ever be asked to show evidence of competency in any foreign country. If you are, you have a coastal sailing license which would qualify you to sail coastal in any country if they require a license. Once you outside of their territorial waters you are outside their jurisdiction no longer subject to their rules.

I agree..
I have an RYA Coastal Skipper but I've sailed the Atlantic/Med/S Pacific/Caribe on it.. lets face it.. the most challenging bits of sailing are Coastal.. once offshore there's no more hard bits to dodge..

Watch standing

Weather management

Emergency procedures, communications and navigation

Emergency repairs and first aid / medical treatment

Plenty of stuff to know that you'll hopefully never/rarely get to practice.
