RYA Day Skipper Theory Distance Learning

Greetings from the United States. I am a relatively novice sailor. I have my "competent crew" and I want to get my Day Skipper certification. I recently had an injury which is going to put me in an orthopedic boot for several months so I thought I would use the time to do one of the RYA Day Skipper theory classes by distance learning, either on-line, cd-rom, book, etc. and go to a center to take the test when I'm fully mobile again. does anybody have any experience with these course and can tell me what experiences you have had with them (good, bad or indifferent) as well as any recommended vendors. Thanks.

Hi there my husband is on week 3 of the RYA shore based Dayskipper course and is really enjoying it. He says it's very thorough and well worth the money - another 19 weeks to go!! Good luck!

Where will he do the actual practical day skipper exam

He attends the Nottage Maritime Institute in Wivenhoe (Essex, UK). The tutors will then arrange the practical course to follow on from the classroom based course.

Hi Marlo, sounds like an excellent plan for your recovery period! You'll learn a lot.

I have no personal experience of Day Skipper shore-based distance learning, and so am unable to recommend a specific vendor. However, the RYA keeps a close watch on all of its approved training establishments, and I'm pretty confident that you'll be pleased no matter who you choose.

I think Vic has set up a good course online, and the responses in the e-mails are nice and personal. I must say, though, I fail to see why a Day Skipper course would take 22 weeks. Perhaps if you only do 2 hours a week. For Vic's course you need 45 hours or so, best to do it in as few hits as possible.
