Rules and training testing app

I hope everyone is well.

Is there a best App around for testing against the myriad of rules and regs, esp. colregs? etc etc. An app with great graphics, interactive? Like a Luminosity for sailing?

After 10 years occasional sailing, 15 years full boat ownership, another 10 years casual (not much racing though), there are still theoretical situations where my decision should be immediate ... but I still have to think in some situations, and the other day watching SailGP got it wrong.

It seems from some of the past threads as to colregs and other best practices, there's many people in a worse situation than I.

This site https://asa.com/news/2016/04/08/navigation-rules-quiz/ has a few questions/ answers ... but there's so much it does not cover --- it could be a lot better.

Re: Rules and training testing app

Sail GP have modified racing rules. Most are similar to COLREGS but some differs quite a lot.
ASA has the rules of racing book. Thats the base for racing. Then you need to look at the notices of racing for any modifications to these rules.
Then you got the for everyone COLREGS.
These rules should never have to be applied in a hurry. Plenty of time if you keep an effective watch.

Re: Rules and training testing app

Using a testing app is ok but they do not explain why the correct answer is the correct answer, so basically you are forced to memorize the rules.

This is not a problem with the simple rules but the real coast guard test has many difficult questions that need a good instructor to explain both what the question is asking and why the correct answer is the correct answer.

Example what Identifying sound signal does a 50 meter fishing vessel at anchor sound in the fog?
a. 5 seconds of rapidly ringing of a bell every min.
b. 5 seconds of rapidly ringing of a bell followed by 5 seconds of a gong every min.
c. short, prolonged, short blast on the whistle every 2 mins
d. One prolonged followed by 2 short blasts on the whistle every 2 mins.

The correct answer is D. because to be a fishing vessel you are engaged in fishing.
You still have all your fishing equipment in the water fishing and you are only using the anchor as another fishing tool.
So you do the identifying signal for the fishing vessel NOT for a vessel at anchor.

With that said here is the USCG practice testing site

Re: Rules and training testing app

I like the Imray “Rules and Signals” app.

Also handy for a reference for other things such as flags, Morse code, etc
