Requirements for renting a boat in Europe?

Hi there.

I am from South America and I have no experience with boating at all. I have this idea of renting a comfortable sailboat to sail through some small islands in Italy. I would like to get something around ~35-45 feet to be as my wife doesn't really love the idea and I want to get as close as a small condo as possible.
I tried to find information about the legal requirements and what my options are, but I found it really confusing with all the different variables.

My main doubts are:
- What is legally required to rent a sailboat in Italy? What kind of certificate?
- Can I get classes and the certificates, if any, in Italy being a foreigner or should I get the training/certificate in my origin country beforehand?
- Any recommendations about where to get proper training in Italy or maybe Turkey?

Thanks for any tips or recommendations.

Re: Requirements for renting a boat in Europe?

You need to rent a comfortable sailboat with a skipper who can sail it for you. Believe that taking classes and getting certified or licensed will take a long time, either in Italy or your home country. It is much more complicated than learning to drive a car and getting a license for that. There are no brakes on a sailboat. Each puff changes the amount of power moving the boat. There are no roads to show the way to go, and not all the rocks are buoyed. Besides running into rocks or shoals, boats can also sink. The sails and rigging can hurt you, kill you, or knock you overboard so that you drown. Sailing through the small islands in Italy is a lovely idea. So is doing a mountain-climbing trek over the Andes. If you know what you're doing.

For Italy you need an ICC otherwise you will not get the boat with you or worse when you get into troible…

My humble opinion is that you should inquire at your country of origin if the classes they give are valid overseas. If so, better to get them at "home" than in a strange country.

I live in Holland and we have ICC automatically on our (Dutch) license. That and Marcom B (VHF) is all we need to hop around Europe.

Good luck, and fair winds,
Gijs

I suggest you look at an RYA school in the med and combine learning with your holiday. Alternatively you can join a flotilla without experience as they can self certify you for the flotilla.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but this won't work the way you imagine.

First there aren't big charter organisations in Italy (perhaps except Sardinia) and in general as most stated before, you'll need an ICC (or equivalent RYA or ASA) and VHF-radio license. Also in the Med the expected competence for boat-handling specially in marinas seems to be a little higher than in the Virgin Islands and other popular spots for Americans.

You could do berth-chartering in Croatia or in Greece, which will give you nearly the experience you're looking for. If you're a small family, it's very common for two friendly families charter one boat together. then you only need one set of the necessary paperwork. Same for couples - just look for like-minded couples to share a charter.

In general the support for charters is a lot better in Croatia, Greece and Turkey than in Italy.

Re: Requirements for renting a boat in Europe?

First time round as I said book a flotilla holiday. If you want permanent certification book a training holiday.

Agree with Gijs, ICC should be requested in your hom county.

dream yacht charter have several charter bases in Italy Naples Olbia and Sicily. contact them im sure you can charter a boat with them. In France you definitely need no license or training which i think is crazy

Where in the med. the “ med” is not a country.

Re: Requirements for renting a boat in Europe?

Surazo may be better off posting in a separate, new thread. This thread is about RENTING a boat. He is BUYING a boat, one which is apparently registered in the Cook Islands (???) Different situations and rules are involved.
