I still have not found where Wing obtained the list in his book.
However, I was able to examine the analogous page in the Fourth edition of Wing's book, and the list differs from the Third edition in only one instance. The ninth entry
,Manual for Lifeboatmen, has been omitted from the list in the Fourth edition.
I was considering this list a
current, canonical list of works for an expert mariner, but not knowing where the list comes from, I do not know whether it is a valid list. For example,
Weather for the Mariner by Kotsch is published in 1983. It is reasonable to expect that there have been changes in
weather monitoring and notification in the past quarter of a century that is not covered by Kotsch.
Meteorology by Donn is even older.
How would a professional
captain keep current with new technology?
