Pirate Degree @ MIT

No mention of boarding ship tactics, use of close combat use of swords/cutlesses or speak-like-a-pirate in their curreculum..😉

Re: Pirate Degree @ MIT

I would have thought downing a bottle of rum per night would be a required skill.

Re: Pirate Degree @ MIT

As a holder of two MIT degrees, and knowing the unbounded energy of these students, it struck me initially that this story might be true. But looking more closely at the photo, the building in the background is not the iconic Building 10 Great Dome of MIT that is often seen in photos. Is this a hack perchance?

Re: Pirate Degree @ MIT

It's probably a stock photo (or, more likely, a combination of stock photos). I doubt that there was an actual photo available of a grizzled pirate-looking guy in front of MIT's campus.

It should be noted: “... The MIT Pirate Certificate is for entertainment purposes only and does not give the recipient license to engage in piracy or any pirate activities.”

Unfortunately, this wasn't available when I attended MIT or I would have definitely taken all those courses!

Re: Pirate Degree @ MIT

My guess is that consuming rum isn't something they felt their students needed further instruction in.

Would be nice if they geeked out a bit and required celestial navigation, too. I mean, this is MIT.

The MIT Pirate Certificate is only made available to MIT students and is an incentive for undergraduate students to complete their Physical Education & Wellness General Institute Requirement of 4 physical education & wellness courses.

Proper training is always of use! Now the real question is if they are supporting this with some pirate business courses to make use of the physical skills.

Re: Pirate Degree @ MIT

I wonder how many students signed up thinking it was pilot training.

[Apologies to Gilbert & Sullivan.]

Re: Pirate Degree @ MIT

As a graduate of Los Angeles Harbor College, the Seahawks, who took all those classes except fencing (it's too effete) I don't need no stinking certificate.
A "physical education" class was required each semester, my swimming class was canceled and so I had a choice of square dancing or archery, we did use long bows and wood arrows, so more period correct then modern classes.
