Re: Live Aboard Sailing School Recomendations
Too Much importance is given to formal education sometimes
Sailing is much about living onboard and practising, not about engineering and NA science

Re: Live Aboard Sailing School Recomendations
If you have the time, we would love to have you come sailing with us in Grenada! We offer seven and ten day Catamaran Cruise and Learn courses. We also offer Basic Keelboat (ASA 101) on our small monohull as a two day shore based course. This is the best way to learn the basics.
Grenada is located far enough south that sailing here in the summer is still great. Especially early summer - so it might work out with your wifes work schedule.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

I somewhat agree. Some of the ASA courses seem product specific. A basic course in navigation is a plus. I have no idea what someone buying a 28ft. mono will gain from a vacation on a large cat with 10 other people it is apples and oranges.

A little well timed coaching in either subject reduces your time fumbling around in the dark. 😎

Mono or cat, My bad, should have said type specific.

Makes more sense.
Just for reference, there is only one ASA Cat specific class (114 Cruising Catamaran). All other standards are for an appropriately sized mono, though a couple can be delivered on either cat or mono (104 Bareboat and 106 Advanced Coastal).

Re: Live Aboard Sailing School Recomendations
Hi and happy 2018!!
I plan on going to the VI in March of 2018, me(we) want to learn how to sail a cat to continue working toward liveaboard dream, are there any schools on the great lakes that train on cats? and/or any recommendations other then usvisailing that provide the 103/104/114? We sail May-October on Lake Ontario. thanks

Re: Live Aboard Sailing School Recomendations
I can't really help you in the USVI, but if you would like to come a bit further south we would be happy to help you with your sailing goals! We offer Catamaran Cruise and Learn courses based out of Grenada. Here is a link to our TripAdvisor reviews: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attracti...h_Grenada.html
I would encourage you to look for independent reviews of any school you consider.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about learning to sail in the Caribbean. You can reach me directly by email: Chris@LTDsailing.com

Re: Live Aboard Sailing School Recomendations
If you have sailed a tri for three years you should be competent sailors if not competent in seamanship.
While sailing in warm sunny places is a nice vacation you will learn more about tides, tidal streams, rocks, difficult entries and interacting with big ships by taking classes in Maine or the RYA courses on the Solent in England.
https://www.boss-sail.co.uk/
Classes in the Caribbean will not teach you how to handle bad weather and tides in New Zealand if crossing the Pacific should become an ultimate ambition.

Re: Live Aboard Sailing School Recomendations
I have my 101, 103, and 104 ASA certification. Done a lot of lake sailing and some deep sea fishing. Looking to get more experience sailing in open water, charting between islands, anchoring, etc. I am looking for an affordable (cheep) sailing school for my wife and me. Any ideas? We have off work form end of May to middle of August.

I suggest you just volunteer to crew and help with expenses. As a single handler, I love convivial and helpful company, especially if they help defray expenses too 😀

Re: Live Aboard Sailing School Recomendations
hi, follow up to my earlier post, we took the asa 101/3/4/5/14 with virigin island sailing school in march. having sailed and owned a boat for 3 years I found most of the book work repetitive, saying that, having a 44 cat to practice with vs my 26 mono, was well worth price of admission. I would recommend this school and all the courses.

Re: Live Aboard Sailing School Recomendations
Be careful. I can't see a lot of parallels of handling a 44' cat and a 26' mono. They both float.
