Strange question, but if seriously meant: Of course, everything done in accordance with all applicable rules and regulations as well as common sense.

Not a strange question at all. I know several "captains" running illegal charters without proper insurance but thanks for the answer.

I couldn't agree more! But, like I said... if anything ever happens, please be safe and be protected. Everyone is your friend and a friendly client until something happens... then they all turn against you... sad, but true

My official USCG COD after the boat came out of the factory is 53GRT 42 Net.
There is also a lot of discrepancy in the translation from French to English...the numbers get wacked on a regular basis. Try measuring the catamaran yourself, each hull separately, then the central cabin. That’s going to come out way less than 50gt. Try working backward from 50. Who ever did the measurements forgot about the 12 foot gap between the hulls.

Some familiarity with Simpsons rules is required to measure the complex shape of a hull.

LOL good comments. I worked 40 years in the oil patch and have made quite good money. I am just looking to have fun and combine my USCG and ASA certificates legally. All good here.
All ASA certs are recreational level only, so dont apply to passengers for hire.

People! Call the extremely helpful and knowledgeable folks at the NMC! It's hard for me to believe that they 'haven't been helpful'. I've called them countless times, and every time I've gotten courteous and professional help, and the correct information. Almost as if they're the last bastion of intelligence and accurate information for customer service.

Of course I called NMC first off. Interesting that they outsource their helpline she gave me the wrong answer of "same as your Master rating"

I give Pandor gold star for correct answer:

46 §15.905 Uninspected passenger vessels.
(a) An individual holding a license or MMC endorsed as master or pilot of an inspected self-propelled vessel is authorized to serve as operator of an uninspected passenger vessel of less than 100 GRT within any restrictions, other than tonnage limitations, on the individual's license or MMC.

Interesting how the thread drifted into making money, insurance, tonnage calculations and other not requested topics but I enjoyed all the responses.

Re: Can I downgrade to OUPV?

You can restrict your tonnage and keep your license. I have a 1600 GRT license with Oceans. Because I am retired and no longer drive tugboats, my tonnage on the renewal will cause my license to be Restricted to 300 GRT but I’ll still have the 1600 ton license.
Hold onto your license if you can
