Some years back, if I remember correctly, NZ attempted to impose their own national safety regulation for yachts headed offshore on visiting vessels. This was challenged in court and NZ backed down. Not at all familiar with the details of the case, but it would be interesting to know if NZ backed down because their policy went against international maritime law or agreements, or they simply backed off seeing the issue as an economic mistake considering that the negative publicity would probably drastically decrease the high number of crews that make NZ a refit stop on their circumnavigations.

As long as you have a UK address All you need to register it under the British flag is proof of ownership and £25.

Neither qualifications or insurance is legally required in UK waters. This is extremely unwise though.

Easiest way forward - join the RYA (worthwhile anyway), and they will issue you with icc on the strength of your day skipper - free.

Elcid, are you not eligible for an RYA issued ICC? It depends on your countries Article 40 status. See here....

He is not, Romania is a member of ICC.

Isle of Man registration requires a survey. This might be more expensive then 500€ for Polish flag.

Re: Boat registration in the EU - as EU citizen

Here is a curious tale of boat registration. The Australian Maritime safety authority requires that any vessel (any vessel) traveling overseas and owned by an Australian citizen must be registered in Australia. You don't have a choice. The absurd extension of this is that if I own a 3m sailing dingy and sail on the Solent I need to have my dingy registered as an Australian ship and all the palaver that is required. Would love to hear if anybody has a point of view on this.

Polish flag is 17 euros if you have the ability to write polish and collect the paperwork in Poland

Nope icc can only be issued to same country residents.

Ireland and the UK have a special derogation that allows then to issue iccs to US residents

These days SSR registration has been tightened as they usually now demand proof of residence ( Utility bill etc )

Brexit makes U.K. reg less attractive also

Re: Boat registration in the EU - as EU citizen

[QUOTE=Elcid;3279049]I am a EU citizen - and I am looking to buy a boat in Spain.
I only have a RYA Day Skipper certification (and not the ICC). Due to some complications the earliest I could obtain the ICC would be next year in March.

Is there a country (e.g. Malta) where I could register my boat, that will accept only my RYA (and not require ICC)?

What are some countries I could look for? I researched Spain - but the it looks very messy [/QUOTE
] you do not need any license to Register a boat. You do not need a license to sail YOUR boat, only some insurers want a license....

Re: Boat registration in the EU - as EU citizen

OP, I know that you live in Denmark right now, and that you originate from Romania.
Can I please ask you, how long time have you been living in Denmark ?
Do you know anyone with sailing and boat experience in Denmark ?
Why do you want to buy this particular boat in Portugal, when you live in Denmark, without having consulted anyone local of this topic ? What is the purpose of buying this boat ?
For own use, or just to make money of this ?
We have a lot of cases in Denmark with fraud from eastern european citizens, so please clarify your purpose to me.
Please do not use the highly esteemed CF experienced people to help you with scam frauds.

If you are a true and honest person, I can help you with your questions.

But usually, people from Romania do NOT buy such a boat, because there are no way to sail a boat in Romania, exept from the Black Sea. Romanians are not known for their sailing skills.
In this Covid19 times, how can you even get a boat from Protugal to Denmark ???

Please understand my suspicion, OP.
