Advice On Insurance

My 43' steel-hull home built diesel trawler is nearing its fifth birthday. My insurer (Markel) may either drop me or require an out of the water ultrasound survey, at a cost of probably $3,000. Geico won't even do liability insurance without the same routine. Does anyone have advice regarding insurance companies that might write at least liability insurance for me? What companies do other cruisers use? This is a scary situation for me.

tk-
They are so insistent on the survey because, simply put, steel corrodes and they are afraid that if anything wasn't done properly from Day One, you may be in danger of sinking. That's a valid concern, it should be scarier than the $3000.
If you are absolutely positively dead certain that just can't happen...just be certain.

Re: Advice On Insurance

Thanks for the advice. Regarding corrosion, the boat was just out for a complete professional sandblasting and new paint. It's a little odd, but my boat has absolutely no corrosion below the water line, because I use a surplus of aluminum anodes - even bare steel does not rust. If it ever does rust, it will be from the inside, and I watch that just as cloesly as you suggest. Above the waterline it's an ongoing spot it and scrape/prime/paint enbterprise.

Re: Advice On Insurance

Look at Boat Insurance Specialists | Haven Knox-Johnston, email Haven@msamlin.com.

They offered me £3,000,000 3rd Party insurance cover on a 45 year old UK registered steel sailing boat

Not sure if they can cover US vessels, Let us know how you get on.
