Re: Which Power Catamaran ?

We have chartered the Moorings 434 PC = Leopard 43 pc for 10 days in the BVI this Feb.

We have chartered the the Moorings 47 PC a few years ago and absolutely loved it. It had Cummins 150hp engines and we only used 1 engine at a time so it was very economical.

Cotemar, What was the fuel use on one motor?

The figure the most efficient cats are doing and striving for is 1L per NM.

We have not been on the Leopard 43 PC yet. Will give some feedback on our return from our BVI trip in Feb. 2017.

I do not have high hopes for this Leopard 43 PC to be that efficient, as they come with twin 220hp or 260 hp Yanmars.

We were going to purchase a Leopard 51 PC last year, but they would not put the 150hp engines in it anymore, even though it was designed for 150hp.

Interestingly, the first few Leopard 51 PC are being sold in the 1 year by the 1st owners because the twin Yanmar 8LV 370 h.p. are fuel guzzlers.

150hp was perfect engine for that design, so they should have stuck to it.

Hi there ,
On our AfriCat , at idling Rpm ( 900 rpm ) in gear we get a SOG of 7.4 knots and the Volvo engine management is showing a 0.430 litres per nm per engine so we are below the 1 litre over nautical mile

Good figures but how do those big Volvo D6 435 HP handle those revs long term?

Re: Which Power Catamaran ?

I currently have a Mainship 34 trawler with a big old Perkins 6.354 turbo 240hp motor, and get way better fuel consumption than 1 liter/mile. I keep meticulous records and average 1.5 gal/hr at 7 knots (1400-1500 rpm). I guess the old heavy low RPM motors just get better efficiency than these higher rev Yanmars. I have been looking for a power cat that gets similar performance with the ability to go faster a sacrifice mpg and quite frankly am having a hard time. Everyone says the cats are fuel misers, but so far I am not finding the right ones. I want something in the 40ft size that cat cruise efficiently at 15kts (3mpg) or better and also get good mpg at 7-8kts. The only think I can find is a Scimitar and the engine access is so bad that does not seem to be an option. Anyone have a suggestion? Also, can't be wider than 20ft.

Re: Which Power Catamaran ?

If you are in Australia and that you are looking at a Simitar suggests you are.

They are indeed rare beasts unless you want to pay a lot more.

Two that are capable.

Re: Which Power Catamaran ?

I'll be chartering the Moorings 43PC next May, with an eye towards buying one off-charter in 5 years time or so to cruise back and forth from Toronto to the Caribbean as a live-aboard. I can double check peak fuel efficiency or anything else you might be interested in.

Cheers
