What to do about rusting turbos

Good day. So I'm running a Searay Sundancer 245 with two Cummins 380HP motors. The owners of the boat want it looking like new, which I'm busy affecting.

One thing I'm having a problem with is the rusting of the turbos. I understand that due to the metal makeup of turbos, and the extreme temperatures they reach, that rusting is pretty much inevitable.

However, I would like to clean off the rust periodically. Naturally due to the massive heat it can experience, I don't want to just use products, due to the dangers of ignition and/or toxic fumes that can emanate from the heated product.

I was thinking of using a rust converter to clean off surface rust, and then wipe down with fresh water afterwards? Is this safe to do?

Do any of you folks have a tried and tested method that you ordinarily clean rust off the turbos?

Thanks.

Re: What to do about rusting turbos

We had our turbo done with Cera Kote by a professional shop.
We had enough distance between the hot side fan blades and the casting to coat the inside of the hot side. You have to check with the turbo manufacturer.
Rust on the interior of the hot side can damage the fan.
We have a stainless mixer and an exhaust gas water separator so back pressure on the turbo is low.
CeraKote is used on military weapons and components of the manatee crew
Pizza Bazooka.
Happy trails.

I’d start by having a look inside the exhaust side of the turbo.
If there is any rust at all in there, the exhaust system is poorly designed, or broken, and will eventually destroy the motor.

Most US cities have someone who can Ceracote. It’s commonly used to refinish firearms so if you can’t find a shop that does it call local gun shops.

Sure, the ceramic coating can dress it up, and is really tough and heat resistant, but what I’m saying is that the source of the rust must be addressed first!
Whether it’s salt water dripping on turbo from hatch cover, broken hose, spraying shaft seals, or hopefully not, from inside the turbo.
Many production boats leave the factory with poorly designed exhaust systems that can eventually lead to water intrusion.
Some good reading over at sbmar.com, “Tony’s Tips” section.

We believe CeraKote on the interior of the hot side of the turbo is a bit more than cosmetic in benefits.
You are correct, a lot of exhaust issues are design problems and it is the first place to start. D’Angelo Marine Exhaust is a good example of a top quality shop and like most, they’ve seen numerous horror shows caused by poor design.
We would not recommend CeraKote as a DIY and of course, you must check with the turbo manufacturer.
Happy trails.
