What Kind Of Handling Can I Expect From a Steel Hull Boat With 20,200 lb Displacement

Hello folks,

I am looking to possibly purchase a 1998 Glen L Steelaway 35' Pilothouse. She has a steel hull 20,200 lbs of displacement and a 35 hp diesel. Would anyone know what kind of performance I can expact from it when sailing and motoring?

With a 35 HP engine, you're not going to set any speed records, but the boat should be very fuel efficient. I'm guessing you will find a sweet spot for fuel consumption vs speed at 6-6.5 knots. You should also be operating the engine at it's sweet spot for load, which is much better for the engine than lugging it along underloaded.

My 95,000 lbs. boat moves at 4 knots with a 40 HP wing engine and runs at 7.5 kts at about 50% power on the 135 HP main.

I couldn't find the exact boat you are looking at, but there was a 35' Glen-L on Yachtworld that advertised to a dry weight of 35,000 lbs with a 30hp engine. These boats aren't going to set any speed records, and will probably be reduced to 2 knots motoring into 25k in open waters, less VMG than that if you try to sail. But they will get you there.
