Towable boats

What boat and what do you tow it with? I have a 2017 F-250 that could tow the boats I am looking for. Ranger Tug 27, Regal 26 XO, Cutwater 24, and Baja 25 outlaw.

I would like to get a smaller truck like a F-150. Not sure a F-150 could comfortably tow a Regal 26 XO.

Re: Towable boats

I think a F-150 could easily tow a Ranger Tug R-23 or the Cutwater 24. But probably not the Regal 26 XO and maybe not the Baja 25 Outlaw or a Ranger Tug R-27.

I would be towing 500 miles in some cases.

Re: Towable boats

What are the weights (including trailer)?

Good chance the 1/2 ton has enough propulsion power to get the boat moving (ie: tow rating) but the more common issue is to run out of payload. 1/2 ton trucks have wildly varrying payloads from as little as 1300lb to upwards of 2500lbs depending on how they are spec'd.

Ideally, you want 12-15% of the trailer weight sitting on the ball.

So if the loaded trailer weighs 10,000lb, I would want 1500lb of payload available for the trailer but you also have to account for passengers, cargo in the truck and any bolt on items (bed caps, running boards, etc...). A lot of 1/2 ton trucks will run out of payload before hitting the tow rating.

How often will you be towing and what percentage of miles will be towing? If you are at 8-10k lbs and the truck is primarily for towing, I would go 3/4 ton. If it's usually a few miles to the local launch and maybe 1-2 trips of a few hundred miles but most miles will be running empty, I would look at a 1/2 ton with suitable specs.

Re: Towable boats

I am figuring on a 1,200 to 1,500 lb. trailer. So yes, the truck would be towing the trailer with a big ole boat on it I towed smaller boats with zero sway. I used undersized tow vehicles and still no sway.

These are cabin boats and my guess might sway because of the cabin hight catching more wind.

I would be towing hundreds of miles because I want to explore from Dale Hollow in Tennessee to the 1000 island area in New York and Table Rock in Arkansas.
