The problems with new Leopards are so damning that a
used boat with some low time experience but with the bugs worked out. I'm a retired yacht
broker and I always thought the Leopards were too slow to bring me the sailing performance I crave, BUT, their roominess and comfort are legend,
I would like to take a used 45 ft.
Leopard and turn ir into the ultimate "motor sailor". I would sell the
Yanmar 45 HP engines and replace them with 75 HP
Yanmar engines with an Ecodrive system. This is the system the HH44 and HH52 employ to provide
electric propulsion and regeneration capabilities to keep the
batteries topped off when running the
boat. This will provide the
boat with the speed while
motor sailing to average 8 kts. boatspeed to make 200 mile days a reality.
The lower cost of a good used
Leopard 45 plus the
sale of the low time original engines
will help offset the cost of the modifications.
