Re: Some REALLY Bad Seamanship

can't fix stupid. We saw something similar on the Potomac when a small speed boat tried to cross the wake of a big speedboat going the other way. Darned near threw the driver and his passengers out of the boat. The passenger was definitely injured and they were lucky the boat didn't do a backwards somersault

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

Let me guess, crushed internal rib frames, smashed engine mounts, how clever.

If you don't like how I drive my boat, stay off the sidewalk ;-)

I've spent way too much time in the surf- swimming, surfing, windsurfing, etc. That was a pretty advanced level of stupid. I'm impressed.

Re: Some REALLY Bad Seamanship

I will admit to once doing that in my dinghy.
The swell had come in since I came ashore and was now breaking maybe 50 meters offshore. I stood in knee deep water watching the swell to time my departure between sets, when a swell or 2 didn't break. I thought I had it, started the engine jumped in an went. After I was going a good bit offshore and committed, I see a huge swell rise up. I knew that I had to get over it before it broke, so I gunned it. I just made it, and did like in that video.

Not something I would like to do again. But I think if I had stopped when I saw the swell my dinghy might have been overturned.

You guys have never watched a poker run. "It is not a speed contest". The year we watched, the leader hit a freighter wake and flipped.

That's SOP when getting back to the mother ship after a grocery run on lots of mainland Mexico anchorages. Tenacatita for one.

Re: Some REALLY Bad Seamanship

One of the craziest things I witnessed on the water was about 20 years ago when we were racing 49ers at Long Beach CA (I think it was OCR). We were out sailing and heard all these motors revving up and saw about 50 speed boats similar to the one in the video about a mile away. We also noted a load of bright orange balls in the water next to the boats.

The boats took off and the bright orange balls lifted up out of the water and were following the boats.

It turned out that those bright orange balls were helmets protecting the heads of water skiers. It was a race - man that must have been a big throw to see who had to be the water skier!! Absolutely nuts!

When you saw those two or three small waves come ashore, you should have been crossing them at the 50 meters offshore point. IOW, you were late leaving.
Learn to read the wave pattern by watching the fishermen landing their boats for example.

That's how I learned.
