SECOND GENERATION WAVEPIERCING CATAMARAN YACHTS

The wave-piercing technology has been around for some time and has so far mainly been applied to fast ferries and military applications mainly owing to the high development and building cost.

Having now been thoroughly tested and improved in complicated tank tests as well as in real operations with real sea conditions, the wave piercing technology has now come of age and has become affordable in the building of smaller vessels in the 20 to 50 m range of passenger and private/charter yachts.

As the wave-piercing technology is relatively new in the yachting world, few yards master the exacting construction method and most builds are custom built in close co-operation with the designers, which results in prices somewhat higher than that expected of a 'normal' and series produced catamaran. On the plus side comes better economy and improved sea-keeping qualities.

There is also a high degree of 'oneupmanship' owing one of these stunning wave-piercers.

The main experience and qualification pertaining to the wave-piercing technology comes from maritime designers in Australia and New Zealand, examples of which can be viewed here:

SECOND GENERATION WAVEPIERCING CATAMARAN YACHTS

SECOND GENERATION WAVEPIERCING CATAMARAN YACHTS

I repeat the heading of my first posting as it seems to have escaped notice from some members of this board.

I agree entirely, wavepiercing technology has been around for a long time and a lot of un-successful boats have also been build during this time However, we are now talking about the seond generation of wavepiercers which has evolved from the original concept as to virtually have become a new boat, and all this thanks to the commercial versions which had the money to spend on research and development which we the private yachting fraternity now are reaping the benefit from.

The jaw design on wavepiercing catamarans is critical. First generation designs have knuckled jaws with heavy plate inserts. They need to be continually surveyed for fatigue cracks and repaired. The second generation has an organically shaped jaw with minimal stress concentration and therefore is stronger and structurally reliable.

When you have the time I suggest you follow the suggested link I posted where you will find examples from some of the best designers.
