Re: Rio Dulce

Head first across Gulf Stream to Cape Antonio Lighthouse at western tip of cuba, Then head to Cayman islands catching gulf strean eddy s until opposite Isla Mujures then cross to it. Perhaps refuel at isla Mujures---Stay close to reef going down Yucatan (again riding counter current) until arriving at Livingston . I would skip Belieze!

Re: Rio Dulce

Wait for east wind, cross gulf stream to coast of Cuba, run down coast (10 mile offshore max)past Cabo San Antonio(pretty much a washing machine just sth of Cabo San Antonio no matter what the conditions). Stay well off shore to Dulce.
Easy gravy run. Miss mexico and Belize. And cross gulf stream once.

Re: Rio Dulce

I am not positive, but i do not believe you can just fuel and leave without checking into Mexico. Not sure how anyone would know, but that's my understanding. Isla Mujeres has a customs station.

I have no idea why folks are suggesting Port Antonio (Jamaica).

Here is the current Gulfstream current. You may be able to head SW towards Cuba to avoid a 2-kt knock, maybe even pickup a counter current. Then cross the next leg of Gulfstream at right angle.

I believe you can also get fuel at Puerto Aventuras, just south of Playa del Carmen. Would get you an additional 50 nms south for fuel. I do not know if there is a customs station there.

I used to deliver powerboats, based out of Sam Francisco between Alaska and Cabo. If you provide more details on your boat (type, power, fuel), I may have additional thoughts if you still have questions. Click image for larger version
