Powered Cats

Any thoughts on the viability of powered cats for cruising, both coastal and blue-water. Looking for something a little more fuel-efficient than a trawler.

Re: Powered Cats

There's many out there, though far fewer than monohulls for coastal, and even fewer blue water. I did what is now an older writeup of some of them, and the fuel efficiency benefits - bluenomads.blog. We aren't cruising (yet), but will be on our custom aluminium powercat, probably even hybrid electric...

Re: Powered Cats

Just met a man who built his own powered cat. It was a beautiful work of art. He had 2 outboards on it and he said it burned about twice as much as a planing hull. But he conceded that in rough water she could be a bit much to handle. I am not sure what that meant exactly but I figured, if I ever considered buying one I'd ride in one for a while.

Blue water it will depend what range you’re planning for.
