Noseeums

Hello everyone! Planning to spend a month of June in the Exumas on our 33 ft power boat cabin cruiser. Question is, what’s the situation with Noseeums there and mosquitoes in June? Going to be using marinas on different Cays most of the nights and sometimes anchor out.

Went there last year for a month in November and it wasn’t bad at all. No Noseeums at the marinas and only a few mosquitoes during that month.

Is it different in June?

Thanks
Victor.

Re: Noseeums

Yes, June is very different, from November.

In the Exumas, the rainy [and ‘bug’*] season lasts from May 10 to November 6, with a greater than 18% chance, of a given day, being a wet day, and with a peak probability [of rain] of 30%, on June 2.
On average, June is the wettest month, with 233.0 mm (9.17 inch) of precipitation.

* Mosquitoes reproduce in standing water, while Sandflies reproduce in damp soil/sand [primarily in spring].

“Sandfly Away” works on No-See-Ums/Sandflies [and they claim: Mosquitoes, Fleas, Horseflies, Wasps and Ticks - Sandfly repellant, made in Exuma, and available in Exuma Markets, Smitty’s Convenience Store, Prime Island Meats, UP-SOO Convenience Store, Fergie's Kitchen, Dive Exuma, Out-Island Explorers, The Weddings and Beach Boutique at Chat N' Chill
It contains NO DEET or IR3535.

Re: Noseeums

"Sandfly Away" tells us that it does not contain DEET, but won't tell us what it DOES contain. There are several "natural" oils that to some degree repel some insects, but if you need serious protection use DEET on you and permethrin to treat your clothing.

Re: Noseeums

We came back at end of March from Berries, Eluthera and Abacos. To start with we had terrible bites at Great Harbor, so bad we considered ending the voyage. We purchased the following:

Permethrin-Repellent on Amazon

We sprayed the product onto clothes, sandals and hats. It worked, we also sprayed onto screens. Almost no bites afterward. We also found if you do get a bite a product called 'After Bite' seemed to relieve the itch within 5 min.
We also routinely applied repellant.

Re: Noseeums

Thank you every one for your replies. To our surprise there wasn’t any sand flea bites/noseeums visiting many Cays in the Exuma last November but planty mosquitoes a specially when taking trails exploring islands. The reason I post this question about sand fleas/mosquitoes is that like Fiftybucks say they’ve considered ending the voyage. Don’t want this to happen to us. We’d rather wait until November going there instead of this June if we knew that there’s more bugs this time waiting for us. Thanks again

Re: Noseeums

A tried and true repellant for noseeums, is to get some "skin so soft" cream and mix it with some water in a spray bottle...works like a charm

Re: Noseeums

I was in the VI in November .. mosquitos were aggressive and could deliver a bite as soon as they touched your skin. Also they carry the west nile and dengue virus now.

Re: Noseeums

Permethrins is your friend. It works o clothing, bedding and helps immensely on screens. Besides, its fun to see the flies land and fall dead. I had very lightweight clothing made that I treated, and didn't get bitten while wearing it.

The popular "skin so soft" did not work for me as a repellent. It probably depends on one's own skin chemistry whether it does or now. The repellents with DEET and picardin both work for me.

Bengal Roach Spray found in grocery stores in the Bahamas is 2.0% permethrin and 98.0% inert ingredients.
