Leopard 51 Powercat Opinions?

My wife and I are seriously looking at powercats for liveaboard in the Mediterranean. The two candidates so far are Fountaine Pajot Cumberland 47 and the Leopard 51PC.

Looking for owner reviews and opinions and similar suggestions.

I like a lot of things about the Leopard but the helm location is a deal breaker for me. In any kind of bad weather it's not going to be much fun up that high and you are completely removed from the rest of the boat. If you added an inside helm station to the boat it might make it work. The Leopard is built for the charter industry and is not designed for the cruising boater.

Wow, beautiful boat. We switched to a trawler from a sailboat. You are going to love it, whichever boat you choose. Kenomac, I would suggest posting this question on the Trawler Forum also.

Good luck and let us know what you get.

Cheers, Bill

Re: Leopard 51 Powercat Opinions?

I toured a Moorings Leopard 51 yesterday, looked very white and I did notice the absence of the indoor helm. I look forward now to touring the Fountaine Pajot Cumberland 47.

You can always get the option upgrade for the mast

I like the Fountaine Pajot Cumberland 47 I think it a better looking boat and higher deck.

The Fountaine Pajot Cumberland 47 i saw online has an inner helmstation with a joystick

the Leopard 51PC has none.

EDIT: I see you noticed the helm issue as well.

Not interested in a catamaran that can't do better than 20 knots when it's needed. The idea is to avoid any bad weather and ditch the sails altogether. In the long run, it's cheaper and easier to buy diesel instead of fussing with sails and all the gear and rigging.

I like the new Fountaine Pajot's as well. The layout/priv etc. They may not be as chichi as the leopard, but they look more solid. Some of the HUGE windowz are nice.

Good choice moving here.

Re: Leopard 51 Powercat Opinions?

The location of the engines on all the new Leopard Powercats is puzzling to me...Aside from the noise when underway, I can imagine all sorts of problems related to its location.

Removing all stuff from the room during maintenance, gas/oil smell, smelly clothes cushions etc...

Have you had a look at the new Fountaine Pajot 44 MY ? Seems to tick all boxes of the previous 47 and also has an interior helm.

That is, if you can live with the IPS drives...

Re: Leopard 51 Powercat Opinions?

Yes, we did look at the promotional material on the FP 44 MY a couple weeks ago, but the FP 47 Cumberland is much more appealing to us. My wife doesn't care for the 44 MY, she prefers more outdoor area on the stern with a large table and some room to lay about.

Basically what she wants, is a Lagoon 450 powercat..... But Lagoon doesn't make one. Hint, hint.

Lagoon makes a 450 powercat

Here it is. Its VERY fuel efficient and has low windage.

Re: Leopard 51 Powercat Opinions?

As mentioned before, take a serious look at the engine room(s) for accessibility, remembering that the engines need a lot more love on the powerboat.
