How to get started navigating from Delaware river to St. Michaels Md?

Hi-

My wife and I are interested in purchasing a small pilothouse boat to navigate from Philly to St. Michaels Md.

I currently run a jet boat on the Delaware from Easton Pa to New Hope but have no idea where to begin to learn how to navigate through the C and D canal and the Bay.

Are there classes? Would I hire a guide?

Any points in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

The Delaware by us is easy.... No buoys and I can always swim to shore!

Thanks,

Mike

Take a Power squadron course. C & D and the Bay will be a snap once you learn the buoyage system and rules of the road. http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/pdf/navRules/navrules.pdf

I've always wondered how to get the hell out of philly on a boat. There seems to be a long stretch of marina-less water.

Down the river, go right at Pea Patch Island, go through Delaware City.

After you pass the entrance to Worton Creek, never been that way by boat.

Chart will show you the way.

Thanks Everyone. I'll try the power squadron course first.

Yes, USCG Aux or US Power Squadron basic boating course. The BoatUS online course may be useful in the meantime.

Once you have the basics down, navigation through the C&D and through the Chesapeake is straightforward, in fact, relatively easy.

There's one stretch -- through Kent Narrows if you chose that route -- where shoaling can be an issue, but that just means you need to pay particular attention to the markers (a useful skill, everywhere)... and you can cross that bridge when you come to it.

When you're ready, we can hum a few bars about St. Michaels; we go there often, and in fact just returned from there after this last weekend.
