How hard to find slips/marinas for boats > 40 feet?
My wife and I found our dream boat (Grand Banks 42 Europa - haven’t figured out yet how we’re going to pay for it) - and my wife is worried that we’ll have trouble finding marinas where we can dock it. She read somewhere that a lot of marinas don’t have slips for boats longer than 40’ and that such slips are scarce in general. Is this true? How much do we need to worry about this?

I mean in AZ and lakes it might be more of an issue but that’s a normal length for a small boat in the ocean.
It’s the beam that makes things difficult normally. Not the length.
My boat is 25’ wide. That is annoying at times and I still find places for it.

Going to depend entirely on where you want to locate the boat. Here on the west coast of Florida, 40' slips are easy to find. Even much larger ones are available, though the price seems to go up steeply once you get past about 50' or so.
Good luck.

We took our 55ft, 8ft draft sailnboat to over 50 marinas between the Gulf of St Lawrence and Japan.

There are less slips the larger you go, but a 42 foot trawler shouldn't be an issue. At 28-34 feet you'll get in anywhere. Over 40 and you might need to call around a little bit, but you'll find something.

That answer completely depends on where you are.
On the Gulf of Mexico coast, there are plenty of slips available for over 40 foot boats. And, the prices are reasonable.
We pay $256 a month at our marina, tax and power included for our 42 foot boat (actually charged at 45 feet). We like it here.

Where are you? I pay $250 a month for a 29 foot sailboat behind a private home in Ft. Lauderdale. Dockage at a marina would be around $800 a month.

Thanks, everyone, for your responses. Initially, we’ll be predominantly on the Pacific side of Baja, Mexico. We’ll cruise up California and into the Pacific Northwest. Long term, we hope to travel the world, starting with the South Pacific.

Re: How hard to find slips/marinas for boats > 40 feet?
I can say that it’s true that in San Diego and Orange Counties, it is difficult to find a slip 40’ or longer. You might find something in less desirable areas (aka Long Beach or east Bay San Diego) Most places will let you go up to 3’ over. However, I’m guessing when they take a tape (and, yes, they do) to a 42’ boat, they’ll find the overall at 43’ or more. So measure any boat you’re interested in from swim step to pulpit or anchor.

Depends on where you plan/want to berthm but generally, you you can find slips for > 40'. Slips > 40' come and go. Before you plan to purchase your 42' boat put a berth request application in at the marinas that you would like to berth her and you do not have a boat to do that.

Re: How hard to find slips/marinas for boats > 40 feet?
Hello from the Pacific Northwest. We're 63' overall and haven't had a problem. Anything in the 40 foot length is considered normal and seems to have the most room allocated at all the marinas we've been to. Admittedly, other than a couple in Washington state, most of our marina experience is in British Columbia.
We're presently at a small-ish marina (750 slips). I would say that 50% of those slips are for boats 40' and up.
They're not cheap though, I just checked and boats 37-44' pay US$9.57/ft/mo making it $421.08. Just some info to put in your database.

I hope you are planning on a different boat for the South Pacific and the world. The Grand Banks doesn't have a fraction of the fuel needed for that kind of cruising.

Similar rates in the NE and New England and south Florida. No cheap marinas in those areas.

Well I,m on a wait list for a 32 foot slip. Olympia WA. Measure your boat from anything extending of the front to whatever is extended of the back my 26.5 boat turns into 31.5 from anchor to my ourselves up.
