Florida via Bahamas to USVI

I will be onboard a 65' 25' beam Malcolm Tennant designed power catamaran. She holds 2,500 of diesel. She has twin 650 hp cummins diesel engines. Leaving Florida around the 10th of February, possibility island hopping through the Bahamas. Where would be the best place to take on fuel before leaving the Bahamas. Our destination is the USVI?

The price of fuel in the Bahamas is government regulated, so it will be the same price at all locations.

For taking on large quantities, you either want to call ahead, or stop at a major port since deliveries to the out islands can be spotty and not always on schedule. Because of the large fishing fleet, Spanish Wells has a reliable supply. Georgetown as well, usually.

Re: Florida via Bahamas to USVI

Some years ago I offered to be crew on a trawler heading south just as you plan to do.

It was a tooth shuddering experience against wind and waves the likes of which I never wish to experience again.

Your forward speed will be very slow and wet, and your fuel burn will be exorbitant, so just be aware of that.

Once past Georgetown, plan your days run or overnight run with a fuel stop in mind.

The trip south is well documented in various cruising guides and it behoves you to get one on of these and take notes.

While that is officially the stance, the reality is (Jan 2025): fuel at Bimini Cove $5.73; fuel at Morgan’s Bluff Andros $6.35

OP may want to consult online cruising guides or FB discussion fora for latest info

Staniel Cay, Sandals Marina on Great Exuma, or Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos, depending on your range.

We've met skippers in the T and C's delivering power cats to the VI. Provo seems to be their preferred stop to rest, refuel, wait out weather.

Thank you very much for the information. So far depending on the weather, I'm planning on going through the Windward passage and take the route south of DR, Puerto Rico and approach St. Thomas, that way

Re: Florida via Bahamas to USVI

Some years ago there was a publication entitled " A gentleman's guide to passage south" by Bruce Van Sant.
A believe a pdf version exists, but a copy of this book is relatively inexpensive.
While the book is aimed at the sailing crowd, it could just as well be for the powerboat crowd, and is well worth it.
Do yourself a favor and get it.

Van Sant's book is a good one.
