Electro systems gas detector help please

I’ve got a gs-3 gas alarm on board. Every few minutes the units
display will fade out and cut the gas off.
Ideas? TIA

Is this a fume alarm?

Perhaps you actually have gas fumes? Need to solve that...

Or if it's like some CO sensors, some begin to alarm when batteries are low. And/or, some begin to alarm when the sensor has come to end of life.

Have you checked your alarm documentation? Called the company's customer servie people?

Not CO alarm. Propane only if I understand correctly.
No alarm sounds, the display just fades out, when that happens
the solenoid kicks off the gas. I wonder if your on to something though.
Maybe the alarm is faulty, and there is gas present at the source. (Box with 2 canisters). I’ll check that. Thanks.

Turned on the unit without the canister open. Same result.
I can see the unit fade out and hear the solenoid kick off.

Re: Electro systems gas detector help please

the fading display suggests a 12vdc supply problem, either internal or external. does the display fade if the solenoid is not ON? if no, then using a voltmeter to check the supply voltage at the controller connection when the display fades may give a clue. if no change in supply voltage when fade happens, then suspect controller is bad internally. if supply voltage dips below 8 vdc during fade, suspect supply circuit.

Re: Electro systems gas detector help please

Most likely a power supply issue like a bad/corroded 12V or GND contact, otherwise it's a fault in the control unit itself, not the sensor.

Start looking for a replacement I'd say. I never liked the gas alarms that also control the solenoid. My old one could control it but the solenoidit was still in the box when I bought the boat. The new one sounds an alarm and can send me an SMS when I'm off the boat.

Sure, if your battery doesn't have a proper negative terminal, just run the boat on a suitable sand bank and presto: ground.
