East to the Caribbean

We brought our trawler up from Grenada to Florida last winter and are now preparing to head back. After reading about taking different routes, we are probably going to go Windward passage along the south coast of Hispaniola and puerto Rico. We transited the north coast up to Florida, but the lack of good anchorages on that lee shore is a consideration. Has anyone done this southern passage and if so do you have any wisdom to share.
