Re: Completely Overwhelmed

One more bit. When you post pics of you and yours enjoying the Bahamas on your boat, the name on the transom should be FlyAway. :-)

If nothing else she's got all of us on the hook! Deck officer certainly seems to be taking her seriously, Sooooooo who know

As to "she's gonna kill someone" and compared to the 26 foot sailboat, the difference is she'd only kill her own peeps.

I think the name should be "GG's Revenge!"

Defines marine performance ratings (M1, M2, M3, M4). For a displacement trawler you would want M2. Check page 16 for major international locations. Call and find a local dealer if you want a John Deere diesel mechanic to check out the engines in the boat. There are about 6000 dealers around the world.

Frontier Power Products- John Deere 6068TFM Marine Diesel
Specifications for 6068TFM engine which appears to be the one used in the boat.

John Deere 6068TFM50 Inboard 2011 Engine Test / Reviews Videos, Specs, Fast Facts, Captain reports | BoatTEST.com
Kadey-Krogen's 58 with twin John Deere 6068TFM engines gets 8 knots with a 4 gallon per hour burn. The engines run at 1800 RPM maximum, If run at 2500 RPM will produce 200 horse power, but will not last as long.

One weak point is the Sherwood water pump">raw water pump which will likely start to leak around 800 hours, so check the pump where the shaft from the engine does into it. Most raw water pumps on just about any marine engine need servicing every two years for a new impeller. Maybe this means the seals last 800 to 900 hours.
The reason I am doing this research is I have plenty of time because you can walk on the water here in Wisconsin this time of year.

Yep Mr Fat Cat, I am taking her seriously. I wish I was in a position to make the delivery for her. When I was shipping out of the Port of Tacoma for Japan the great circle track took me through the Aleutian Island chain at two different points and I would like to explore that area closer than I got on the SeaLand Developer.

Small boats sink as fast as big ones if you let the water in.

I got the same thing when I jumped from a 19' day sailor to a 38 footer and then to a 46.

Here's a hint about learning to drive a much much bigger boat than you're used to: Spend a LOT of time learning how everything works before you ever untie the first dockline. Think through each step of each maneuver until you can walk yourself through it calmly without thinking about it. Then take the boat out with someone who really knows how to drive it and do the fender overboard drill. Dock it and undock it over and over for a day, in multiple directions if possible. Do crew drills for engine failure, taking on water, fire, and man overboard.

The most important part is to practice the hell out of your close quarters maneuvering skills so you don't wind up with the boat moving too fast to stop. That much tonnage will make a LOT bigger dent than a small boat. It won't turn as fast either.

You can do it, but it's risky and doing it safely will be a lot of hard work, and expensive. If you're up for that, rock on!

Oh yeah. Get REALLY good at navigation. Running that thing aground or underestimating your bridge clearance requirement won't be cheap.
Good post. Thats what I've been doing. Safety is all about knowing your boat & having a sense of responsibility for the welfare of others, its not about the size of the boat.
I suspect some critics may be "overwhelmed by self importance."

I think this thread is on the verge of becoming overwhelming.

So now the question is to boat or not to boat?

Re: Completely Overwhelmed

In the transportation industry we always say our service adds value to a product. In the case of GG's vessel purchase, there is nothing like it at a comparable price here in the States. From my PMs with her, she is an astute business person and knows the shipping costs will be absorbed by the vessel's increased value in its new location.

Cat Man Do
Nice find, I would find that boat quite tolerable, particularly for the price. It will need some form of stabilizers added.

GG if that is the one, go for it. Sure you have to learn a lot, but you know that and plan on getting help. It's just one step at a time and not all that difficult. IRRC you will start out with school holiday periods & weekends, extended trips are well down the track.

Re: Completely Overwhelmed

Looks like a nice boat, and judging by the engine room, I would not be worried about the engines other then an oil analysis and general run. Bet they run like tops.

Now the lack of holding tanks will require a retrofitted tank or two for the heads. The master head will be the fun one BTW to replum. Love the tub BTW!!

Electronics look a little dated but not too bad. Did not see the VHF radio. Still all in all a nice powerboat.

Boy its hard to keep secrets around here...;-)
