Charter Boat Damage Insurance Abroad

Hi

I will be chartering a motor boat in Croatia for one week in June 2021.

Is anyone able to make any recommendations for an insurance policy that I would be able to take out to cover the cost of repair of any damage during the charter?

Clearly I don't plan on pranging it, but the peace of mind would be great.

Thanks in advance.

I'm a citizen of the UK if that makes any difference.

Regards
Dan

Dan - I don't know about the UK or Croatia, but in the US one of the effective ways to fix this problem is to be listed as a "Named Insured" on the boat owner's policy. For liability purposes, if the boat is damaged while you are using it, then you have become an insured under that policy.

Also: Have you inquired of the company who is renting you the boat? They may have an insurance option available.

You are right to be concerned.

The "Named Insured" sounds like a sensible route but given it's a charter boat the owner may not be interested - nonetheless I will ask the question.

I'm in the process of enquiring with the charter company but I've always been keen to avoid policies provided by hire companies in general as they are often weighted in their favour for obvious reasons. This is clearly an option though.

Thanks for the feedback.

Talk to your credit card company, many have automatic liability coverage if you use their card for "rentals". I don't know if this would extend to chartering a boat but it's something to look into and ask about.

Normally on the rental contract it will state the amount you are liable for if you damage the boat. That sum is what you will want to insure for, but as it is usually an "excess" the cost of the policy might be more than the excess you would be liable for in damaging the boat. Back to square one....

I own a charter boat but there is no freaking way I am going to add, as an additional "named insured" every Tom, Dick, and Harry charter customer that may touch the controls of my boat. I doubt if any insurance company would allow this anyway. Totally impractical.

I thought the charter company offered insurance?

I use Pantaenius for insuring my boat and they cover me on any other boat.
Check them out they are not the cheapest but there are many stories of them going the extra mile to help. That and their policies include everything not specifically excluded unlike many others. I just googled and they do specific charter insurance.

Extra insurance for charter boats in Croatia is one thing, one has to have a sailing license of a specific level to use any boat in Croatian waters.

you "normally" cant insure anything you do not have an " insurable " interest in, as its a huge moral hazard

hence the only insurance that is normally available , other then emergency short term cover , would be insurance arranged by the charter company

Re: Charter Boat Damage Insurance Abroad

In the US a named insurer typically has to have certain qualifications (e.g. Coast Guard certification) and would cover you if you were to take people out on a charter trip. The coverage would be no different then if you were contracted under a charter agreement, key point being you are still at risk for the deductible. Most charter companies have options for additional coverage to close the deductible gap. Itís a few hundred for piece of mind. With a reputable charter company itís a straight forward arrangement and I canít imagine more costly then trying to set up a one off short term policy on your own.
