Re: Who Thinks the Earth is Flat?
You do realize that 80-90% of Americans profess to believe something without proof. In some countries it is even more wide spread, though some are less gullible.
There is something in human (mammal?) nature that requires us to belong, and something in the brain that allows us to cling to ideas and prejudices without proof. What matters is that the idea was presented to us by someone that we respect and that it helps us to belong.
I've found this puzzling since I was about 10. Before that I didn't think about it much, one way or the other. I guess I was slow.

Basically the earth is a disk, with the center at the north pole. This explains why people can sail around the world, they just made a circle. Antarctica is the edge of the world surrounding us.
Apparently, all attempts to reach the south pole are shrouded in mystery, and if you actually went farther you would discover new lands.

Hang around a dock for a bit, and this idea wouldn’t sound so

I tested it at my house. I put a marble on the floor and it didn't roll away. It's flat.
How about at your place?

Very true…
World’s Least Religious Countries
As humans we are pretty irrational animals. Most of what we think we believe because of facts or logical thinking is really just our brain trying to rationalize the irrational choices and decisions we all constantly make.

Re: Who Thinks the Earth is Flat?
It all began with that hoax called longitude.. All that prattle about clocks and sun sighting and mathematical horse puckey. Any reasonable person should believe their own eyes.

Re: Who Thinks the Earth is Flat?
The Flat Earthers can often see Chicago from the other side of Lake Michigan, but the math shows it should be mostly hidden under the horizon.
The Round Earthers counter that this is often a superior mirage. Sometimes even a Fata Morgana mirage.
I have never seen a superior mirage.
It is blind faith to believe the Round Earthers, no?

Re: Who Thinks the Earth is Flat?
It's from an article in the Daily Mail. If those lying journos and editors told printed that it was raining, I'd still go outside and check. Freddy's quite a character mind you...

Re: Who Thinks the Earth is Flat?
I am an ordained minister of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. I can tell you that we are not ready to take this flat earther group on at this time. Indeed, with the strange reality around these days, we feel, as a religious parody group, that we are actually being persecuted. How are we supposed to make people roll their eyes, to be skeptical of other ideas without evidence, without reason, when we must exist in today's reality? We are just holding on, hoping for some sense of normalcy, when, once again, just a little, we might be able to stand out from the crowd. Let us pray...

Re: Who Thinks the Earth is Flat?
It's the human experience to criticize another person's beliefs but harbor even crazier beliefs ourselves but of course never recognize that within ourselves...every else is nuts but not me, lol. When those belief systems are given to us from our parents when we are children we accept them as unconditional truths, flat earth or otherwise. There is a direct connection between higher education and skepticism.
