rofl--i dont sail where there are swimmers--only tankers and merchant ships and cruise ships..LOl... we all share here no matter who we all are...that tanker was huge and kept moving tho--- did look like it had a mouth on it to swallow a small sailboat under 40 ft...impressive..

I have quite a few demons... But like someone said earlier - it comes down to managing your fears.

Having said that - I'd really hate to be hit by lightning. Like these guys. (A fun blog to read.)

I worry about conditions changing without warning and things breaking.
I don't like docking at unfamiliar docks (especially tricky ones) - our boat doesn't maneuver very well at slow speeds and in tight places (I get that awful knot in my stomach every time.)

Some things I was once afraid of, I now have overcome. (Sailing in 35knot winds, anchoring in crowded harbours, (although we still are vulnerable to others who may make poor choices). Or just plain making an ass of myself, I am learning to let that one go! ha.

One thing that helped me feel more confident, was to take the boat out for a weekend without my husband. A girlfriend came along (with lots of sailing experience) but she deferred all decisions to me. (That was the point of the exercise.) I realized then that I'm more competent that I thought!

Overcoming fear has been integral to the enjoyment I get out of sailing! It's dangerous to get cocky though, a healthy amount of fear is not a bad thing. It may keep you safe. (It's all relative of course.)

Bellamar has (to my mind) a massive amount of propwalk. I have slowly been able to manage it, but it is topmost in my mind when docking, there is only 2' 10'' between myself and the large powerboat I am berthed next to.

Well, last summer I sailed over to Vancouver to pick up my daughter and her husband to take sailing. I berthed at Coal Harbour, in about the fanciest marina in BC. I felt like the poor 3rd cousin. When docked, I removed the wheel to give more room in the cockpit, as my daughters in-laws came down for dinner.

Next morning we set out to go sailing, I pushed Bellamar free, jumped aboard and to my horror found the wheel was still bungy corded to the lifelines!! We were inexohortably drfting into a line of super expensive yachts. I scrambled about, got the wheel on and managed to apply power, seemingly inches from some million dollar yacht. The bow had drifted off in the wrong direction, and I then had to do a 270 (propwalk) with by this time a gaggle of onlookers.

Luck was with me, no one got scratched, and lesson well and truly learned. I have added one more item to my checklist before leaving the dock. I actualy took a bite out of the demon that day, but she's (he's??) still lurking.
