I was hoping you were going to say that. When I was a child my father worked for a tugboat company. Whenever a hurricane threatened they took the tugboats into the Everglades and tied them to mangroves. They never left them at the dock.

The trouble with the question is not the question but answering whether or not we were stupid enough to follow it. So, with that in mind, I'm not telling.

Hahaha! This is the best story I have ever read!

So we got caught in a 5' following sea. I told my sailing companion to dump the sail when we got to the bottom of the wave, but she was having too much fun (it WAS fun, truthfully, at the top of the wave ...) ...
and she said ...

NO.

The boat was overpowered and rounded up. THEN she dumped the sail, and let go of the mainsheet, and it went through half of its blocks. The boat was rolling so much that we couldn't stand up to get the little lines through the cringles and around the boom, which would have been very dangerous anyway with the wind behind us since it couldn't be done out of the way of said boom.

I told you it's been an action-packed four years ...

So we sail up the next wave, and we hear a thump in the cabin. "I wonder what that was?" says my companion. "We'll have to find out later," I said.

Go down the next wave, and she doesn't dump the sail. We round up severely again, and we hear another thump. By then we were quite busy, because we'd also heard ANOTHER thump. The gas can had freed itself and was no longer connected to the outboard. The motor was no longer an option.

"Has this tiller always felt this loose?" She asked? That as we approached a treacherously shallow area.

I pointed the boat out to sea and into the waves. She objected. She wanted to be CLOSER to shore. I ignored her.

Later, after SeaTow had us (it was harrowing, truly, to crawl up to the bow to catch the tow line, especially since the headsail had caught itself halfway up and halfway down and could no longer be controlled. I freed it with my rigging knife ...) ...

and she went down to see what had been thumping (besides the gas can).

Karma came through! The first thump was her back pack rolling off the vee berth onto the floor.

The second thump was .....

not yet ....

the porta-potty tipping over onto her back pack.

Re: What's the Worst Piece of Advice You've Ever Received ?

For us it was "There's a ferry harbour on the lee shore. It's not in use any more, but you can hide from the storm at the concrete ferry dock." When we got there we had 2.5 meter waves inside the breakwall, half broken ferry dock with concrete blocks in the water, and too much wind to turn the boat around in a tight space. we already had passports, wallets, and papers ready as we were looking for a less rocky place to beach the boat as the wind died down for a minute and allowed us to turn around and get out.
The best piece of advice? Stay away from lee shores...

Ohhhh I'll NEVER forget that one -- that was my first time "out of the bathtub" and in the open Gulf of Mexico.

Re: What's the Worst Piece of Advice You've Ever Received ?

Another lie from a CEO of a company in which I had a lot of stock.
Only another 18 months!
That was the first of a litany of the same advice when the stock was at 50+.
Now it's under a buck, and the board has built in protection from dilution of their preferred stock.
I could have bought a new luxury car in 2000 with less than 500 shares of the stock.
I bought it anyway with cash.
Now, I couldn't buy my same 11 year old car with 500 shares of the same company's stock.

"You don't want to live on a boat. Think about it before wasting your money."

You can list every excuse to not live on a boat here _____________, each and every one has been offered to me as advice.

Only one person has been with me on this move; she was initially more enthusiastic for me to move than myself.

Probably making an offer this week and be aboard by November. I hope.

From a family member: Hold on to your company stock options as long as you can. I wonder if they will pay us the 80k we lost out on...
