What do you miss most when sailing?

Hi all,

Greetings from Sydney, Australia.

I'm new here, and to be honest not a very experienced sailor. I've done a few coast-hugging sailing trips but that's about it. Looking to get into it a bit more though.

My girlfriend's family are big into sailing, and are about to embark on a 3-week sail around Tonga/Tahiti/Fiji. As part of this trip they'll be at sea for 5-7 day stretches between islands.

I was hoping to get together a 'care package' of items that she'd enjoy on the boat during this period. So far I haven't come up with much more than the predictable sweets/lollies, Savon de Mer shampoo/body wash (for washing in salt water) and a (loaned from me) iPad in case she wanted to watch a movie.

Otherwise I am pretty stumped. Can you lend any assistance? What land luxuries do you miss most when you're out sailing for multiple days?

Cheers

Lawrence

Ha - that is a good point.

From what I've been told their longest stretch will be 5-7 days (I think she's missing the longest stretch) but you're obviously going to know better than me.

May include a photo of the mainland for her to stare at!

she's probably having a much better time than you can imagine

Send her some artwork, do it yourself, something simple... She really doesn't need "first world" items on this trip. she'll be fine... Just give her something to let her know you're thinking about her (awwww!) And remind her she has something to come back to (better make it good!).

Does she like to read? I love to read and I never thought I'd say this, but a Kindle is fast becoming one of my favorite onboard devices -- much more than my ipod/music. It makes it easy to have a HUGE reading selection - much more than just exchanging a couple of paperbacks at a book exchange. Is she a photographer? Does she need anything for the camera? I loved it when some friends put together a package of my favorite snacks - like the gallon box of goldfish, but it sounds like you have that covered.

Load that Kindle before you leave.
There's no wifi or 3G out in the ocean unless you spend many $$$.
