Sitting up watch at night. I have a Newporter, with the huge Cleopatra lounge in the cockpit - so when it's cold, I'll be propped up against the taffrail, bundled up, scanning the horizon periodically. No engines, underway with the sails steering, maybe a little help from me on the helm. If there's too little wind, I'll drop everything but the mizzen and tie her back tight to keep us pointed into the breeze... And just float in the silent darkness gazing up at the sky, alone.

Sounds amazing. There is something magical about sitting alone in the darkness staring at the sky and water. Love watching the phosphorescent trails as dolphin swim at the bow.

Re: Secret Pleasures Aboard Your Boat

I don't currently own my own boat (just sold my little Hartley TS16) however my CEO lets me take out his 45ft catamaran. So let's just say I love sitting on top of the deck, as we sail along, feeling the warm salty breeze. Mooring in the late afternoon at south strand broke island and having some drinks as the sun goes down. Ahhhh simply bliss...when everything goes to plan!!

Remote anchorage, 3am, moonless night. Laying on the tramp looking up at the stars. I get lost in that, wonderful!

Re: Secret Pleasures Aboard Your Boat

Early afternoon naps with the boat rocking my wife and I to sleep. Not the research boat, but my own boat of course.

Opening the bottle of wine with my husband after a long day of full sails...watching sunset, grilling dinner...just us.

Sailing along with OTTO at the helm, go down below and put my ear against the hull in the bow area... What a RUSH!!!! The sounds as the water smashes into the bow is like a tornado coming, as it rushes past... WOW, love it! Makes me have goosebumps. Especially when over 7 knots!

That is so awesome! I also love to hear the rush of water (though I haven't put ear to hull) and to see the waves splash by the portholes! Or standing on the bow in a storm with wind roaring and being splashed by spray. I was up there for a serous purpose but gotta say, it was soo exciting!!

Just make sure the water ahead is clear of all obstacles, I think I hit a small chunch of wood or something one time, no marks on teh boat, but just about filled my shorts!

Going for a swim and noticing that the bottom of the boat doesn't need to be cleaned.
