Run Over by a Fishing Boat!
Last week i was in Le Lagoon St Martin at dusk in my dink with an all round white light mounted on the engine and a head lamp when a twin engine fishing boat doing 40+kts ran me over. I saw this coming and at the last minute turned to starboard and the fishing boat hit my engine and left some bad rug burn on my port tube plus 4 inches of water in my dink. The guy did turn around to see if i was still alive.
But my new outboard cover is split, my light broken off, and I have a huge bruise on my back where the engine hit me as I hunkered down and turned to starboard.
So for all of you, even if you have the required lighting (2nm) at dusk, don't assume that they see you. If i didn't turn in those last few seconds I would be dead, or in the hospital recovering from twin 300 HP engines.

Re: Run over by a fishing boat!!!
We keep a handheld rechargeable waterproof spotlight in the dink to shine in their faces if it looks like they are headed for us. Bright enough that it hurts to look directly at it.
Of course, only works at nighttime. Nearly got run over by one of those guys in the middle of the day yesterday. Glad you are okay.

Hand held might be good. I shined my bright head lamp towards him a few time, but he didn't see it, on plane hit bow was still to high to see me in my dink at water level

Spot light, air horn and hand held VHF are all good ideas. I'd also be sure to file a police report or a USCG incident report (assuming you're in US coastal waters).

Why didn't you just get the hell out of his path, instead of turning to starboard at the last minute?

Re: Run over by a fishing boat!!!
Why would you assume that you'd been seen, especially in a CBDR situation? Assuming that you've NOT been seen is SOP, day or night. Until it's well, & fully clear that there's no danger of a collision. IE; you're past the CPA, & distances between you are opening.

Here we go with the committee assessments.

Fishermen aren't always well known for looking out for other vessels. Thank goodness you survived.

I think you both made good points.......yes, why wait until the last minute ?
Was there a reason you couldn't get far away from his heading ?

Re: Run over by a fishing boat!!!
The area where you are moored (AIS is on) is right in the path the boats take from the bridge to Port Cupaquoy and Sandy Ground, and the Anguilla ferries going to the airport. There's also a lot of jet skis flying through there at 40+ and they don't care who's in the way. It doesn't surprise me that there are accidents.

Re: Run over by a fishing boat!!!
Look how many people driving cars hit other cars in broad daylight. Some people just can't drive, and they don't care. . Some days, nothing but God can keep you from getting hit.

When you say it like that it sounds like you believe your god is also responsible when people do get hit. I have a nephew who was severely disfigured in a car accident. You gonna tell me your god was doing him some kind of favor?
