Re: Pictures of crashed Catana in St. Martin.

Interesting that both skippers claimed to have been running under radar at the time. I would assume here that they would have had guard zones set up to ring a collision alarm anytime a craft was within a mile?

Scary to think that they both could have missed the alarm. More likely, I think, is that neither skipper knew had to program a guard zone.

What few cats I've been on, below deck (not at the helm) is a stateroom with a panoramic view???

Very few singlehanders would charter cats for an expensive vacation by themselves

I was amazed that both of them didn't flip. Of course if they were monos they would have sunk.

I am pretty new to the boat world, but I can tell that is not good.

Re: Pictures of Crashed Catana in St. Martin.

Too many boats going and coming from the islands with out an experenced captian and I'm guessing there sound systems were turned up too loud to hear any alarm if it was on.

It's 17 miles from St Maarten to St Barth's. It's a daysail from Nevis or St Kitts, It's maybe 55 miles from Antigua. For a cat this is a cake walk.

You really have to wonder what they were doing then. Why run on radar for a day sail unless it's foggy? If it's foggy what on earth are you doing below?

What really seems bizarre is that neither was watching! The mind boggles.

At 10 knots ..even 20 knots closure speed ...hardly requires strict heads up vigilance. Colliding in a pair of sailboats is almost comical.

Ya take lessons, ya read books, ya join a forum and receive advice from people who seem to know what they're talking about, ya load up in insurance. Ya condem all singlehandlers as unsafe fools.
Then ya rent someone elses boat..........

Re: Pictures of Crashed Catana in St. Martin.

What are the odds that two boats are going to be on a collision course without a watch in either boat? I think these guys are candidates for the Frane Selak award.
