old threads, new postings

Do you ever find yourself posting to threads that are several years old? It really makes you feel stupid. Everyone go ahead and laugh!

Thats why we keep the old threads!

There are some very good old threads that come up from time to time.

I do it.

I don't feel stupid because....

I firmly believe that I'm the most awesome person in the world.

Keep that mindset, Hal, and you won't feel stupid about anything... ever.

Hahaha, I'm just kidding...

But no... Seriously, I am.

Cheers

Bill

Sometimes new people have new things to add to old threads. We all get smarter over time.

Nope.

What is stupid is when someone starts a new thread without searching...

There is noting wrong with asking questinos (of course, that is why there are discussion forums). But how about when someone comes along and posts something like "Should I carry a gun to defend my boat while cruinsg the ICW?" The question is not even the problem it is that you know who is going to answer, and what they are going to say in advance.

Much better to post to threads that have already addressed the issue, then you are more likely to get answers to your actual question rather then broad replies to the topic. (eg, "The ICW is pretty safe" as opposed to "Pirates are dangerous and will kill you").

I don't SBP (Search before posting). If the topic has been discussed before than I'm sure one of the distinguished members will point me in the right direction.

S/V, I carry a gun and I will carry it while cruising the ICW (Inside the states), what do you think?

P.S.... Pirates are dangerous and will kill you.

Cheers

Bill

I can't count how many times I've referred the questions in a new thread to an old thread that had already covered the subject in detail.

Some just like to chat even though the subject has been covered but if there is more info to add to the subject, I'm all for it.

It seems every year or two we do get another generation of people that ask some of the same questions or bring up a youtube that's old but we can graciously refer and move on.

This is probably impractical and a stupid idea but what if a group of Moderators and Volunteers had the time and inclination to recognize the best or most informative threads on a popular CF subject? Then perhaps re-title (if vague) and mark or rate them as “Best Read” or something.

It would be easier for newcomers or all of us to sort and find the answers or even revise it with updated info.

Over the years…those particular threads would then become our go-to “bible” on that subject and become a well visited reference.

A lot of work, but if shared by volunteering to split up the task I think it would be a great feature to better reference all that knowledge.

My only request for those reviving an old thread is to say..."I know this is an old thread but...." so WE know that YOU know that the person who asked the original question may be long gone and you are just posting to add something of value. This way I don't have to read the whole thread before realizing that it is 3 years old and a dead issue except for the most recent post.

Different forums seem to have different policies. Some don't want you responding to threads that are more than 6 months old, while others don't want multiple threads on the same subject.
I can see both points.

What if anyone at any time could click the "Rate this thread"?

Not really that stupid and actually possible. See top of the thread sceen just above the first post on the screen. Use the star ratings.
