Luperon? Be Aware...

I came limping into Luperon DR with a broken engine.

Then, according to my trusting nature, I made an agrrement with a local
mechanic (by the name starting with Ch) to take out the engine to see what
was wrong with it. The agreement (verbal) was $50 a day, a great sum for
that country and its level skils.

The guy worked for 12 hours (two days) and therefore I paid him $100 for the job. Now, Jan 9 2010, I got notice to appear in the Fiscalia Court (local magistrate) on monday 1/11/10 to answer charges that I did NOT pay the guy.

For you guys thinking of Luperon, this is something to consider.
Beware of local shysters.

That is why no matter where you are or how much it is you always get a receipt at the same time you hand over the payment. Before you actually put it in his hand is even better.

Shin;

Sorry about your troubles, but that is like saying, beware Miami. Or beware, New Bern, because somebody there ripped you off.

Call the guy and ask what this is about. Perhaps there was a misunderstanding?

Martinini is right ! I should have asked for a receipt. Caveat emptor (fools beware)

Moral of the story I paid twice. Sure there are chancers in any port, but this place has got more than a fair share.

Did the mechanic do a good job? I mean, was this guy worth it or a waste of money?

If the guy took out an engine and solved a problem that you couldn't , in 2 days for $200 , I wouldn't say you were ripped off .You may have been overcharged when he suddenly thought he was being underpaid .... Caveat emptor ( buyer beware) , in this case would mean ask for signed proof of payment, even if it's written in a notepad .
If he didn't fix a thing , then yes , you were taken advantage of , sorry , but don't blame a whole place.
So is the engine running ?
