Yes, and that tells you what you should do. I keep a couple of the "old style" or "water jug" style handy and use as needed.

Re: Jerry cans are unusable
I have a small vessel, Ranger Tug R21EC on a lake with no diesel pumps so a 5 gal container has been my fuel station.. I use the Safety Siphon (also have 2 water and fuel) . Hose is long enough to get about every drop from the 5 gal container. For $14 on Amazon worth having a couple of them
Even using that EPA approved spout for gas in my car, lawnmower, outboard etc I am going to spill some fuel. Amazon has a Super Siphone (siphone and accessories) for $34. I am thinking about getting it for the hand pump. it seems that might come in handy for something. I have a box pretty much labeled "might come in handy for ...."

Not only have they made the cans absolutely perfectly useless, it has sent the price of them through the roof!
I can remember good old steel jerrycans for 10 bucks apiece.

Outboard fuel hose with primer bulb but no fittings. Easy. No spillage even at sea with a big sloppy left over sea. I have been doing it this way for decades.

Re: Jerry cans are unusable
They sell plastic hand pumps on Amazon for about $25. Works great for pumping the contents from a Jerry can to my 41 Hunter. Takes about 2 minutes. No mess! No spills! No sucking on a tube.

Re: Jerry cans are unusable
It is really difficult to try and pour from a 20 litre (5 gall) container using a spout while underway unless the water is completely flat. I tried the little electrical pumps (Jedi at #17 gives the link) but they never lasted more than about 12 months, fell apart or just stopped working because of v cheap construction (made you know where....). So i reverted to using the jiggle/shaker which works every time, foolproof, needs no battery, etc. and none of the sucking nor blowing involved with other solutions.
Magic. Highly recommended as others in this thread have also noted.
Andrew

Re: Jerry cans are unusable
I have the diesel (yellow) equivalent of this "can"....have used it twice with good effect (no spill) as it drains from the bottom so no need to lift/hold and tilt. Expensive, but works. Not affiliated with the company at all. https://www.westmarine.com/buy/surec...MaAuv-EALw_wcB.

If I'm carrying any can for 5 miles, I'd bring along a small folding cart with wheels. Can carry more of them that way too.

Re: Jerry cans are unusable
I look at garage sales for good old fuel cans. Also use a battery powered fuel transfer pump. Maybe slow for some but works great for me.

In my mind, most of the problems with the EPA spouts is that most are designed for you to hold the can 2 handed and not need a hand to operate the spout. The No-spill can I posted earlier is the only exception I've found (spout is push button operated, so you hold most of the weight of the can in 1 hand). As long as you can maneuver the weight of the can with a hand on the spout portion, the button gives good control.

I have not used the No Spill can on the boat, but I had one for my motorcycle. Over about eight years, several times a year I would go to a racetrack for a track day (not racing, but riding the track as fast as possible). I brought the gas tank since the gas at the track was always priced too high. Easy to use, never spilled any fuel. I admit, however, the gas tank of a motorcycle is easier to access than the opening to a boat's diesel tank.

It definitely depends on the boat. Some have fill ports that are easy to pour into from a can, others are kinda a pain and really only good to fill with a hose.

A cart makes good sense, where they work, but carts don't work well everywhere.
I'd want a jerry can I can carry easily, say across a beach to the dinghy.
