So we see. Not sure why, never tried this before! He's busy copying and pasting into an open post now.

We have decided to share this as it is simply our sailing log, where we were at that time. The same as we smsed through to the folks. The only reason we didn't allow it to be published on our blog as we sailed was due to the risk of piracy. And just to add to the illusion of my delusion, I believe we were also approached by pirates off the coast of India, but that's another story. And not one I'm sure would last very long here! Besides, I didn't take photos of them, either.

So here it comes....

Brilliant, that'll do just fine.

And your guess of elevation above horizon...?

About 30 to 45 degrees. Nearer 30, I think.

Re: I Think I Saw MH370

If you can get some quiet time, perhaps you can close your eyes and revisit that night, what constellations you were looking, what direction the plane passed your field of vision. Don't try to force it, just let it flow through that watch.

Re: I Think I Saw MH370

I'm having trouble getting the raw data for the MH370 track, but I have made some progress. Essentially, the rough Google Earth screenshots released by authorities up to now put the track to the east of you, but there is no guarantee that this is the actual path, given that it is just a straight line between the last radar position and the first 'handshake' estimate as far as I can tell.

I have worked out from what you have said that the track of what you saw would be around 9km to the west of you, assuming the altitude is around 17000'.

I'll try and see if I can find the raw lat/long data of the flightpath when I have the time (not right now). I won't post any pictures until then.

Please, keep us posted if you have any response from authorities. I'll be interested to see just how they deal with the report!

The 'official' track posted below.

Re: I Think I Saw MH370

I think Malaysia is on GMT + 8 whereas Thailand is on GMT + 7. If the latter is what was being used aboard then one could work out a time. This may not be what the log shot shows.
Memories are easily influenced and that should be avoided.
On the other hand a plane on fire is rare (more so one otherwise unreported) and I would think an experienced night watch keeper at sea would likely distinguish one from a meteor.
It could be important because one could query if a plane on fire could continue flying for another 7-8 hours.

I thought I saw a plane on fire. I just didn't believe what I was seeing, so the meteorite theory was a rationalisation. Whilst I've seen meteors up high in space, I have never seen one which has broken the stratosphere. I should google that and see one one looks like. I felt it wasn't travelling fast enough to be a meteorite, but I don't know how fast one of those travels. I am also sure that if a meteorite had hit the Indian Ocean that night we'd have heard about it.

OK, here is my first wild guess of the track based on known positions of airway intersections. I don't have time to do anything better at the moment. Don't read too much in to it yet.

This is pretty interesting stuff.

The next question in the puzzle...

How long can a burning plane fly or glide?

My question and speculation is what would a pilot do if onboard fire suppression didn't do the job and a suitable runway was too far away? Just maybe explains why he climbed to an altitude far above the plane's service ceiling in hopes of starving the fire of oxygen???

A big gamble because in such thin air the wing could stall.

Detail of the boat track and CPA. Shows the flightpath passing astern from port to starboard. (boat track-up not north-up) Swap the lower two boat track labels round, for some reason they are flipped at larger scales.

Re: I Think I Saw MH370

Dealing with the important stuff first...

She Who Must be Obeyed was first used in H. Rider Haggard's book "She" in 1886 (a great read by the way, as is King Solomon's Mines from the same author), later quoted by Rumpole in the Rumpole of the Bailey TV Series as Mark noted, and by Arthur in the Minder TV series as noted by Boatman.

How far can a modern jet glide or keep flying once it is on fire? Not sure, but nowhere near where they are currently searching, I am pretty sure of that. And being one of the Australian tax payers who just lost millions from our education budget I can't say I am totally thrilled by the thought that the current search is possibly in the wrong place. I am already struggling with the fact that they are spending so much on the search at all. I feel for those that lost family and understand their desire for closure, but my goodness it is a lot of money being spent out there for no obvious tangible gain.

Matt
