Re: Hitting an anchored boat in a sparsely populated anchorage while under sail
I'm a bit "hard of hearing" as they used to say. I like our AIS anchor alarm, it is the only one loud enough for me to hear at night when I am not wearing my hearing aids.
So, having a GPS-linked anchor alarm on all night that I can hear is a good deal for me, as I sleep deeply and don't wake up for every little puff that moves the boat.

Don’t come crying to me (or the forum) when it happens to you.
The boat bums are exactly the people who do it.
For what it’s worth, it happens when you’re not at the boat. If you’re on the boat you’re probably OK. And that’s why you haven’t got robbed yet. You don’t leave the boat.
I used to be stupid. I came from a nicer area. The north east. But after I was continually robbed, I smartened up.

Sorry, I feel a need to defend my home state. I've lived here for 60+ years, I've been boating for most of those years, and I've NEVER had ANYTHING stolen.
I really like living in Florida. I've lived in other places - Virginia, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Illinois, New Jersey. I don't want to live in any of them.

Re: Hitting an anchored boat in a sparsely populated anchorage while under sail
Welp, one of the neighbors went down last night.
It’s not deep here.
This was “single stern light on a bow pulpit in place of all around white light”
The other boats are occupied. But this one is not.

Where do you boat? Where do you keep your boat (marina? Dock? Mooring ?) There are good and bad areas of Florida. I’m interested in generally where you are so I can go there.
A lot of my stuff happened around Jacksonville. But by the time you get to Saint Augustine it’s a different story if we are talking about Northeast Florida like your profile says. Nothing gets stolen in Saint Augustine.

Re: Hitting an anchored boat in a sparsely populated anchorage while under sail
LOTS of stuff gets stolen in St Augustine far as a place goes! I bet 90% of stolen boat stuff in NE Florida happens in Green Cove Springs!
Both STA and GCS have a place to buy used boat parts............think any connection?

Re: Hitting an anchored boat in a sparsely populated anchorage while under sail
I'm curious if you've learned anything more about the incident since witnessing the collision firsthand?
That boat that sank isn't the one that got hit was it?
Have you seen the owner of the boat that got hit? Spoken to them?
Have you learned anything about who the idiots were that hit it?
Regardless of proper/improper lighting, radar, AIS, or anything else, these folks must have been absolute fools to go tacking through a crowded anchorage at night and hit people. Glad I've never seen something that straight up stoopid near my boat.

Yeah, sorry again, most of my boat life has been in Jacksonville. We've lived aboard here. Had multiple boats, power and sail, at a couple different marinas. Had my Cape Dory 28 at a private dock. Have many friends with boats all over the area. Worked for a broker for a number of years and then several years with Marine Electronics dealer doing installs. All those years, all those people and boats - and I do not personally know any of them who have experienced theft or vandalism.
I know people who have moored and docked in St. Augustine, specifically Salt Run on the left as you come through the inlet. I think I may once heard of something getting stolen there, but I have no first hand knowledge of that. Same with Green Cove Springs at the boatyard there. I think they went through a bad patch of mis-management there some years back and that gave them a bad rap. I have met the manager of the work yard through the marina where I keep my boat. Super nice guy. One of the Club officers just had some really nice work done there. Full bottom job, some through hull work, new cutless bearing, wet sand and buff and wax the topsides, about $7K all told. His boat looks great, it's an Endeavour 33, so mine hopefully will be slightly less when I get the chance to do the same.

Re: Hitting an anchored boat in a sparsely populated anchorage while under sail
It looks like “ Stern light on the bow pulpit” has settled into the bottom and/or tipped over when the small tide fell and rose again.

That was why I posted it originally. I could not fathom how anyone was actually tacking through this Anchorage in the dark, repeatedly, with no navigation lights on, and hitting boats! That’s the craziest dumbest thing I have ever seen on the water. And I have seen a few.
I have not seen the owners of the boat that got hit. And I was really unable to identify the boat that was tacking through the Anchorage and hitting boats. Was too dark to really see what it was. Couldn’t see any identifying information on it.
The boat that sank is not the one that got hit. I have named each of them based on their poor anchor light configurations. Ha ha. The one that sank was “stern light on a bow pulpit”. The one that got hit was “all around whites at deck level topped with slightly higher strobe”

Chotu, get a good search light, always handy on board.
Maybe that would helped to identify them.
One of mine is an old large Maglite which I put an LED reflector in.
Very bright and quite long range. Battery lasts forever.
Old Maglite are cheap and the LED projectors are not expensive either.
Mind you, in your neck of the woods you might get shot at if you disturb the bad guys. Does not happen over here..
