Re: Frustrated, stressed, and about to give up.

Hi all,

an update to give closure to the Beneteau 44CC visit in Turkey. After we returned we got an answer back from Beneteau France about the deck construction. Indeed, they confirmed the construction is made up of balsa.

So we had asked the surveyor to return after the owner at our request had removed all the side ceiling panels to give better access to the side decks from below. The surveyor measured and inspected the sidedeck and found the balsa cored deck to be damped or soaked. In some areas where the stanchions were mounted droplets were found. The surveyor strongly advised against buying the boat as he deemed the structural integrity to be too much impacted.

Needless to say that with pain in our heart we did not pursue this. Spent quite a bit of money, but rather spending upfront a bit than a lot after purchasing the boat.

We'll continue our search. But we have upped the budget to about 170-180k to include solid builders like HR, Contest, etc. In fact there is a nice Contest 44 out there.

Anyway, if any of you is looking at a Beneteau 44 in Turkey, be sure to drop me a PM to avoid a trap.

Lastly, I can certainly recommend the surveyor I had. He was thorough, knowledgable and he even did not want to charge for the second visit he did knowing how much we wanted the boat. The report was well written. If you are in need for a reliable , local surveyor in South Turkey drop me a PM.

To be continued....

It is a rare pleasure to get closure on a topic sometimes.

Thank you for updating us.

Don’t rule out Beneteau. An increased budget will allow boats in better condition. I’ve seen neglected and ruined Beneteaus, and saw one 20 YO former charter 44’ that had been loved and was better than new.

As you discovered, boat searches far away can be expensive. Better to put the money into a better condition boat locally.

Good luck

Re: Frustrated, stressed, and about to give up.

Pep - thanks for the detailed update. You definitely took the right decision. Being able to increase your budget is of course a great thing.

As for the builders you’re looking for now; both HR, Contest, Najad and few other in class are excellent choices, also as they are from existing successful and solid serial builders for 50-70 years. HR and Contest also have very active owners groups you can find/apply to join the discussions and information exchanges at their Facebook pages, look for:
Hallberg Rassy Club
Contest Yachts Owners Club (CYOC)
- disclaimer: I’m a Contest 43-44 owner and a board member at the CYOC, but also active at the HR group as both builders share a lot of designs, systems, parts and upgrades. You can pm if interested in further information.

Best of luck!
